funny thing is that the usb cable also has a firewire connection (for charging obviously). this cable costs $20, but so does the cable that only has firewire. so if you needed a second cable, who would buy a firewire only cable over a firewire/usb cable if they're the same price??

maybe the firewire plug only has 2 connecter pins for power and ground. Just because its there doesnt mean it carries data.

The firewire connector is all 6 pins. Torchedlh makes a valid point and it's the reason why I went for the dual lead over firewire only.

Maby if you don't use USB...and you don't want the extra cord coming off of the dock connector...

I have this cable. You can charge the iPod while you are transferring the songs. Thats cool cuz you don't take the battery healt during your transfert. I never had to charge my iPod with that cable cuz he is always full, or almost.

Not really a reply but a clearification...I was wondering if the new cable from apple could connect and transfer data from the ipod using the firewire pins directly to a pc using the usb connection, bypassing the need to purchase a firewire card for the pc.

if you have a PC

the FIREWIRE CHARGES the iPod

the USB 2.0 send date to the iPod

and yeah you need a firewire card but you are able to find one for cheap

NO you do not need a firewire card if you use the new cable.

usb2 plug connects to your PC - for transfer.
firewire plug connects to the power adapter - for charging.

I believe he's asking if the cable can be used as a cheap USB/Firewire adapter.. plug the USB in your computer and the Fireware in your 2nd gen iPod ...

I don' t KNOW the answer, but I'd have to guess NO.. that won't work.

the answer is NO.

The fireware transmission method/driver is totally different to the USB2.0 transmission method/driver. There is no way you can establish a connection between firewire and USB.
