is there any other firmware out there for the iPod's other than apple's? i know there's plenty of software written to sync the iPod, but how bout firmware? i know some people have done some reverse engineering on the device and i've seen people run linux on the thing!

i cant stand this freakin id3 tag searching! its retarted! it creates a million duplicates and makes searching take forever. I generally keep my mp3's fairly organized but i didnt write every id3 tag myself! the only way the firmware could work right is if i changed all my id3 tags to a standard format (which i'm not doing since i have 9000 of them).

thanks,

Um, you spelled "retarted" wrong. ;)

No there isn't, and I highly doubt there will be.

If you've named your files correctly, as you've stated, then a good tagging program will let you auto-populate the tags based on the file names. Check out id3-tagit (www.id3-tagit.de).

If you have duplicate Artists/Albums, that's probably because your tags are messed up and you're using MMJB which doesn't tag well at all. It leaves trailing spaces.

Tag your files, it won't take long if you have your files named w/a good naming convention.
