Annoying problem

I am using a Sony tape deck adapter to play my IPOD thru my tape deck in my car. Periodically, and randomly, the adapter switches from side "A" to side "B" and stops playing. If I pull the adapter out and reinsert, it is OK, sometimes I hit rewind on side "A" and sometimes it helps. This happens randomly, sometimes 30 minutes after I start using it, sometimes 5 minutes. What is going on and do I need to get a different adapter?
