What are some good, reasonably priced over the head head phones for long plane rides? I don't want to shell out $300 for a pair of quiet comforts, I need someting in the 40-60 range. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I suggest the Sennheiser PX100 and PX200

Can't recommend any for 40-60. The nearest 'hits' are the Sony MDR-V6, Sennheiser HD212 and Sennheiser HD280. All are fatiguing to wear in-plane, and the closed enclosures actually tend to heighten the effect of the 'drone' noises. The PX suggestions are duds... the 200 isn't really effective and 100 provide no isolation at all.
Look into the Shure E2c. In-ear phones which are highly isolating. If your budget won't stretch to that, then look at the Sony MDR-EX71SL... it's better than nothing, and it's not that fatiguing to wear, although I find it pretty fatiguing to listen to unless I go for a treble reducing EQ setting.
Here's a comparison of the E2c, EX71 and Sennheiser noise cancelling phones. http://phonephile.blogspot.com/2005/01/shure-e2c-sennheiser-pxc250-and-sony.html
