Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Got my pod not too long ago, and I can say if there is one flaw with it, it's the lack of power to the headphones. Not volume, actual amp power.

I'm using the white earbuds, and at first I thought the stock buds were poor quality. Every time there was a bass hit, they would clip at anything over half volume. I decided to try them on the tiny flash player I use at the gym. They sounded incredibly good compared to the cheap phones it came with. No bass distortion at all.

Then I realized my iPod didn't have any trouble whatsoever driving powered speakers at full (iPod, not speaker) volume. I tried my full-size hi-fi cans with a 1/4" > 1/8" adapter. Same clipping.

Problem: It's not the phones, the iPod simply has a weak headphone amp. Line-level inputs (powered speakers, stereos, etc.) are typically high-impedance and don't require much current from the source, but headphones do and the iPod simply can't pump out the power needed for heavy bass in particular.

Any suggestions aside from lugging around a headphone amp?

Get a set of canalphones from Shure or Etymotic. These have much higher sensitivities and are easily driven to deafening volume by the iPod. 1/3 to 1/4 volume on the iPod is usually plenty.
