I understand that artists submit their music to music.download.com. but most of those people are people you have and never will hear of. If they were really good...they wouldn't be giving out free music. Why, then, are very good songs from fairly big artists on there? "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service, some Bright Eyes songs, and Taking Back Sunday have some of their biggest "hits" for free. Someone was telling me about a song they liked today, and I told them they could get it free, legally at music.download.com. they didn't believe it was legal. Why do they do this? It is legal...right?

no one? I believe Death Cab for Cutie is on there, too. These people sell these songs on CD's, and are getting a lot of money off of them...why are they giving them out for free online? I've seen a lot of people on there who are selling their same songs on iTunes. Bright Eye's best seller on iTunes...is also given away on download.com. please tell me this site is legal

I understand that. What I'm asking is, why would artists like Postal Service, give out one of their best songs, Such Great Heights, for free? Bright Eyes, is on iTunes music store. Some of their best-selling songs are also being given out for free at download.com. I understand download.com gives out free, legal music, but why would big artists give away their best music?

Because unlike Metallica and other technology-inept bands, they realize how powerful "word of mouth" promotion can be. Somebody downloads one of their songs, realizes that it's pretty damn good, and that person might go out and buy the band's CD or go to their concerts.

Go to some artist websites and you will find free downloads of some of the songs from their albums. It might be one or two or more but since their free artist offer them on such sites as these. It will also promote sales of the CD's the songs are from.
For them it's money. Plus people tell others where to get the songs for free and this can help the artist sell more CD's.
Plus they probably figure if they give a free song or two that will help cut down on the illegal downloading of their music by some folks.
Maybe its a way to get people who've never heard of them to check out their music. Its not like Death Cab for Cutie or the Shins are household names.
