So a few days ago I plugged in my ipod and my computer froze. That was weird. So I restarted it and plugged in my ipod again and this time the screen went grey and a message saying that I had to restart my computer right now in three different language came up...and that is what happens everytime I plug in my iPod now.

Nothing happened to my iPod from the one day to the next day...I don't think I added any new files on that day before. I tried it on one of my friends' computers and the same thing happened. I tried a new firewire cord and that did not help...so it is definitely something wrong with the ipod. So what do you guys think? Is it a hardrive problem? Is it a corrupted file? The ipod still plays fine and will charge when I plug it into an outlet directly...but i just can't connect it to my computer anymore. It's a second generation ipod and i have itunes 4.7 and osx 10.3.7 so i'm all updated on that stuff...

Any ideas will be very much appreciated...thanks!

Joe

welcome to the lounge :)

have you tried to put it into disk mode?

also you may want to try deleting the ipod plist in your preferences, though i'm not sure how useful that is going to be, but worth a try.

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for responding...I tried both of your ideas but unfortunately neither of them worked. I still get the same restart message as soon as I plug my Ipod in...it's bizzaire because the ipod still works normally otherwise. I just can't connect to update because my powerbook crashes and tells me to restart.

Does anyone else have any other ideas or thoughts on what this problem might be?

Thanks.

was your friend's computer a mac or windows box - if the former try and see if you can connect to a windows box and reformat it into fat32, and then try your mac again and see if it:

a. connects at all
b. allows you to reformat back to mac

good luck!

That's a good idea. The one I tried before is a mac, so I think i'll try your idea...reformat it to windows which will clear everything off...and then reformat it back to mac and start fresh...hopefully it will work...ill keep you posted.

I am having this exact problem (out of the blue, everything still works on my ipod except I cannot link to itunes on my Mac without it crashing my computer now).

I don't know why it started and am not sure i care, but I want to fix it. Do people still think the best answer for my Mac-formatted ipod is to is to hook up to a PC, format my MAC ipod for PC and then go back to my MAC and re-format again? I don't care about starting over -- I just want to connect my ipod to my computer again.

so i put my itunes in trash (that's what was crashing), ran the Mac disk utility - repair application and put Itunes back up and all seems to be OK...
