3G & Shuffle -- how do they work together?

I have a 3G 20g iPod. If I wanted to add a shuffle to my arsenal, how would I do so? When I go to plug it in (either directly into USB port or via dock), how does it know which 512mb or 1Gb worth of music from my 15 Gb in iTunes library I want on the shuffle? I read about the AutoFill, but if I want to choose, do I create a Playlist called "shuffle" or something similar? Any help would be appreciated.

Two options for filling your iPod shuffle with iTunes:

Manual: Drag and drop, just like could with any other iPod. Just drag from the library or a playlist and drop into the iPod shuffle playlist.

Autofill: Select the type you want (Totally random or higher rated preference) and click the button...boom, filled up. You can also go into the preferences and select how much room you want to use for files and how much for music so that when you autofill it leaves you some space for files.
