help with ipod in car

hi i am new to ipods and all that goes with it i have a alpine KCA-420i hocked up to a alpine CDA-9831r headunit and a 40gb 4g ipod when i have it in my car i have to go through every song to find the one i want to listen to what am i doing wrong??
