Does storage needs power?

I'm really interested in buying the ipod shuffle for using as a usb key. But can I transfer files on to it if the battery is dead and do I lose the files if the ipod runs out of power?

I'm planning on going on vacation where I won't be able to charge it all for about a month, and I want to load digital pictures on it while I'm away. Will I lose my pictures if my battery runs out?

well it'll charge over USB and no you won't lose your pics of the battery dies, nothing to worry about.
