I just got a pair of these headphones and the cord to the left earbud is MUCH shorter than the cord to the right one. Is this normal?

Yes. The cord on the left goes in your left ear, then the right cord goes BEHIND your head and into your right ear. This is so if you need to take them out of your ears. you can just have them dangling on your shoulder.

Are the 51's like that as well?

I could be wrong, but I thought the Sony's came in both types: long-short and long-long cables. But anyway, it isn't interchangeable.

So, they are supposed to be like that? I'm, not sure if I like that. Anyway, I sent them back and said they were defective. Since there were no instructions, I had no clue.

No they're not defective, they're all like that. It's supposed to go around the back of your head.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I sent the "defective" ones back to be exchanged for a good pair. I never knew "L" shaped cords existed. As you can tell, I'm not much of a techie.

Again, are the 51s like this? I want high quality ear buds for around 50 bucks, but I dont like this behind the head jazz.

Unless you hang your ipod around your kneck, or clip it to the front of your trousers, it does make more sense. The iPod will either be on your left, or your right, so logically you would have a shorter cable on that side and longer on the other. This means there will be less slack cable to get in the way.
You also don't have to put it behind your kneck, but it nice to have the cables out of the way.

It is normal, yer. It's meant to be a behind the neck style of wearing your earphones, so you don't have heaps of cable under your chin. It takes a while to get used to i have to admit, but it makes sense really.

yes the 51's r like that. SOny made all their earbuds with a longer and shorter cord...
