I have a PC with USB2.0 expansion card and USB1.1 on motherboard. I've tried both connections, but I cant get either to let the computer recognize the device. :(

Have you installed the iPod software to format it to your PC? Is it not recognized by your computer at all, or just iTunes. Have you run "check for new hardware"?

iPod Shuffle: Does not mount when not linked to a music library
MacFixIt reader Scott Rose reports some odd behavior (that may be by design) from the iPod Shuffle, where the device will not mount on the desktop, nor appear in iTunes if it is changed from its default setting and un-linked to a music library. Rose writes:
"When you take a hard-drive-based iPod, plug it into a machine, and tell iTunes NOT to link that iPod to that music library, the iPod STILL mounts on the desktop (if you have Disk Use enabled) and the iPod still shows up in the iTunes source list. This is great if you want to manually add songs to it.
"However, with the new iPod Shuffle, if you choose not to link the iPod to the music library, the iPod does NOT show up in the iTunes source list nor does it mount on the desktop. In fact, it's almost as if you ejected the iPod Shuffle altogether... because when you go into iTunes' iPod preferences, it says that No iPod is found. You have to unplug the iPod and plug it back in again.
"Tested this on the 512 MB model.

 So you're basically stuck with only ONE computer that you can link the iPod Shuffle to??
If you do "manual" sync you won't be able to even see your iPod Shuffle or have it recognized for use as a flash-drive?!?
That's a MAJOR blow to all the people that intend to use it as a pen/flashdrive to move files from one PC to another. Holy Crap!! Not good.
Can anyone else confirm or deny this?

Music and More
With up to 1G of storage space(1), iPod shuffle happily accommodates files along with your music. Via iTunes, you tell iPod shuffle how much storage space to leave free for files and how much to Autofill with music. Then use iPod shuffle as a portable backup drive or to exchange files between multiple computers

This may also help with the issue of connecting to more than one computer (sorry it doesn't help the original quesiton).

When using iPod shuffle to transfer files, turn on disk mode first. If you don't, it will appear as if you have to make the target computer (the one that you're transferring files to) the owner of iPod shuffle; doing so will erase the contents on the iPod shuffle.

I can deny this.
I have an XP machine at work that instantly recognized my shuffle as a new storage device and assigned a drive letter to.
I have a second XP machine at home that did the same thing.

i get different results with different computers.
on one XP machine, i plug it into and it doesnt do anything. The Shuffle itself sits there and blinks orange, but nothing gets recognized in Windows. On my main machine with XP on it, it works fine. At work, in Win2k, i plug it in, and all it does is blink green for a second and then nothing.
I've used other pen drives and flash mp3 players (muvo) and they all worked fine on these machines. It would be really crappy if i had to install software just to get it to work. Those KB articles dont really help... its under an assumption that i want to use itunes with it. I don't. I just want to use it as a USB drive between different computers. (not to transfer music, but to transfer other files).

Shuffle does not mount on a 2001 G4 466, upgraded to 1.47 Ghz with OWC card. All software up to date. Apple store says no info in their database yet about a problem with processor upgrades.
Any body used a shuffle succesfully with an upgraded G4 tower? It works fine with my Powerbook 15" AI, so i know the Shuffle isn't toast.
Anybody have any ideas?

Yeah, its a common problem. I had it and i solved it be removing all the itunes packages and deleting itunes itself. THen reinstalling it fresh from the cd. Dont worry about your Music LIbrary it wont delete it
http://krugazor.free.fr/software/desinstaller/DesInstaller.dmg
get that software, run it and delete the itunes and ipod packages
then resintall itunes from your cd
