Do you guys realize at $29, one accessory is nearly a third of the cost of the actualy iPod shuffle? Very, very expensive!

really. and i jus realized a pair of shure e2cs are the same price as a shuffle!
I dono if there'll be *too* many accessories made for the iPod shuffle... after all, it is probably seen as more of a "throw away" device (much moreso than the mini and normal iPod / iPod photo), so I think that there won't be nearly the amount of accessories for the iPod shuffle (such as cases, which people won't be as likely to buy for the cheaper device). Still, those accessories that are made will be, like you said, expensive in relation to the cost of the iPod shuffle itself!

The accessories probably cost just as much to make, and I think they're comparatively priced with Apple's other accessories for the other Ipods.
If I'm buying something for over a hundred bucks, I'm going to want to protect it with something, or buy accessories for it to make it easier or more fun to use. Also, I'd hardly call $99 American a "throw away device", even if we are comparing it to it's older Ipod siblings. I still have my discman from grade 10, and I'll be damned if I'm going to throw THAT away.
Keep in mind that by your reasoning, a small sized sedan is a "throw away device" in comparisson to a Ferarri or a Bentley.
And I don't think I'll ever be rich enough to consider anything over $100 bucks a disposable item.
The Shuffle is, I would say being sold at a low margin by Apple. They are working on selling many millions of them in a short space of time.
The accessories are where they will make their money. Already you can see from other threads that many people who have ordered or purchased Shuffles have added at least one accessory.

I'm not implying that it should been thrown away and not protected -- just that compared to those other two I don't think there'll be as many people wanting to protect it to such as extent ("which people won't be as likely to buy [cases]") -- of course there'll be people who wanna protect the shuffle just as much as any other device.
Keep in mind that by your reasoning, a small sized sedan is a "throw away device" in comparisson to a Ferarri or a Bentley. That's crap. I said nothing of cars and for you to apply my reasoning to that is pointless. The point I was making was that the iPod shuffle doesn't seem to me that as many people will go to such an extent to protect it. Let's use your reasoning. When you see a car with a ding on it, it's usually (relatively) a more inexpensive car (at least where I live). That's not to say the owner of the less expensive car doesn't care or is gonna throw away their car, but just that people who own more expensive car (like a Ferarri) will almost certainly go to greater lengths to protect their investment.
And I don't think I'll ever be rich enough to consider anything over $100 bucks a disposable item. I wouldn't consider it disposable either -- which is why I said "it [the iPod shuffle] is probably seen as more of a "throw away" device" -- I never said that *I* have that view personally.

To be fair, I probably didn't read your post fully and consider what you meant. It was early and I hadn't eaten anything yet = cranky
But nevertheless, when someone writes throw away, I read throw away :)
My analogy is sound, however, on the grounds of comparing price (definitely) and features (argueable). Maybe I shouldn't have taken you to mean mean it literally (hence the quotation marks around "throw away", I guess), but that's really how it looks.
My last comment was more for effect than to infer that YOU would throw away a shuffle, but it suffers from the same ambiguity as your comment, I suppose.

does anyone else find the 27 dollar price tag for the armband a little too much? Guess it doesn't matter cuz I ordered one anyways. I understand the potential for this being a great gym companion, but that lanyard looks a little too long.
I think "throw away" is a good description and actually probably represents the capital value of the item.
Here in Australia the Shuffle 1 Gb is Aus $229.00 (and they are already being discounted) which is about Aus $30 more than most dealers are charging for a 1GB USB Memory stick..
What would I do with a 1 GB memory stick?
I would throw it in my laptop bag without a second thought. I would leave it lying on my desk at the office. I would carry it in my pocket with my car keys. I would NOT want a case for it. I would NOT baby it. I would NOT be overly worried if I lost it except for the data it contains.
What else would $200 buy me in Australia?
Well, three weeks worth of fuel for my car. A meal for two at a reasonable restaurant (upper mid range). Less than half of a gold ticket to an Eagles concert. About 12 movie tickets.
Yes "throw away" is a good term for the price range of the Shuffle but that does not mean that I would take one out to the trash can and throw one in!

The $29 arm band is a bit much. I think they didn't include it so they could meet the $99 price point.
The arm band is mandatory for running.
Basically consider the prices $129 and $179.

30 bucks to protect a 100 dollar item? I'd rather damage it and if its broken buy another and sell the damaged item.
