I just placed my order for my brand new Shuffle and a new dock about 2 hours ago... it's really hard to get through right now, but I'm excited for it.

Anyone else buyin' a shuffle? adn if you're not, why? ;)

I'm buying it tomorrow! I want one sooo bad. I was expecting it to be a major disappointment after hearing about its lack of screen. But now that i've seen it i want one.

And it's so cheap! I'll use it mainly as a flash drive, but as a more portable music player that i can use anywhere anytime.

I don't really like the iPod shuffle. The design and controls does not have enough versatility for my needs, so I am staying with my mini.

i will never even think about buying one, i have no use it and it is BUTT UGLY!

I have a mini, but the Shuffle will be perfect for me warming up for bball games (i gotta have some tunes to pump me up!) and on the bus. (no way I'm risking my mini in that place!).

Can't say I am. Already own a 5GB Micro-HD player and a pair of Rio flash players from way back in the day which seem to be more functional.

yes early this afternoon i placed an order for the 512k iPod shuffle. my sole use for this will be for when i go running and during sports, something i think was very hard to do with my 3G iPod which is too large, heavy, and skips. i never got a iPod mini because even though it was smaller it was STILL TOO HEAVY and skipped. this is perfect.

BUT... there is no way i get rid of 3G, that will remain my primary iPod.

SO... i am the customer Apple was aiming for... someone who wants a 3G/4G type iPod AND a shuffle.

The Shuffle is PERFECT for my wife. She said she wanted an iPod, I handed her mine, and she thought the menus were too much. It's not that she isn't capable, she just wants it to be easy.

Plus she listens to mainly Top 40 junk and her CD's over and over and over and over...

Anyways, It will be perfect for her. I put an order in for the 1GB. I had the 512MB one in my cart and felt as soon as I bought it I would regret not getting the bigger one.

It will be a nice Valentines day gift, in addition to a nice dinner, too!

Thanks,
tortio

Unless I'm missing something, which I very well may be, I'd like an explanation on this. For 150, the only iriver you can get either has 128 megs, or 256 megs... That's pathetic.

I'm not a huge fan of the no screen either, or the overall design of the Shuffle, but for the first time in my life, I can say that Apple appears to have a better price than almost anyone else out there.

150 for a gig is about 100$ less than the competition. Am I missing something?

I will probably get a Shuffle, eventually. I've been looking for something for a while, but everything else is too expensive.

will all of you (except tortio) please stop with "i got a mini, i don't want a stupid mp3 player without a screen."

DUH.

iPod Shuffle is for people who don't want to spend $400 and don't have an mp3 player. of course the mini is better, it holds more songs and has a screen with games and such. Apple doesn't expect people with an iPod Photo to buy the Shuffle. It's not supposed to replace the iPod. It is meant for people who want something smaller.

Now, back to the question...no, i'm not getting one. I have an 4g iPod :)

Can't say I want or need one... Design wise I am not a fan of this, nor do I need a little small flash stick to carry around.. I find it hard enough choosing 10GBs of music from my library.. I can't imagine having to choose 1GB of 30+.. Also, this would hold half of my Zeppelins alone.. ;)

i put in an order for a 512 mb and an armband.
After owning and eventually selling both my 3g 15 gb and blue mini, neither have satisfied my needs at the gym. where I use my music the most is when walking around campus or going out for a run. I need something simple for the gym which is what the Shuffle is.
Of course the Shuffle isn't going to replace any of the big iPods. This is designed for 2 people: Gym goers/Athletes and people who have only 100-150 dollar budget for an mp3 player. Not everyone is lucky enough to have 300-400 bucks lying around to get an iPod.

First, I had a mini celebration today for some reason over the news from Apple. I think I'm hooked.

Anyway, the Shuffle. I love the design and here is my take on it.

My boss went to the Apple store today to get one. I do not know if she got one, but she went there to try. She is going to use it at the gym and sell her Rio or whatever the darn thing is. She does have an ipod but here are the selling points:

240 songs on shuffle = fine. Working out you shouldn't be messing with your ipod.
240 will make you choose wisely. Knowing that she is going to be using while working out, she doesn't care about play lists and such. She wants to work out, not play around with her ipod.
If it is stolen it is $100, not $400. Kind of takes away some of the sting.
Smaller than the ipod. She wants to use the ipod at the gym but between theft from within the lockers and then the size on her arm, she was a bit worried. She is getting this, the case and the strap for her arm.

I think this markets to the world of runners a like. I swear this is something I would consider if I were working out. I may consider it if I am bored one day. But not before I get the PB g4. ;)

I think Apple took a step into a direction to market to those few people who say that the price of the mini, 20, 40, 60 is too much and to those people who do not care for the totally techno items and just want something simple.
This is it. I am happy about this.

That is a REALLY stupid thing to say. I have 2 10Gb iPods and am planning on buying a 60Gb iPop. I will probably also purchase one of these as well. It IS after all, a 1Gb USB flash drive as well. That will come in handy at work and having it play MP3s is a nice little bonus. Hell, 1Gb Flash drives are going for about $100, an extra $50 for one that doubles as an MP3 player is a GREAT deal.....

Yeah. I think that the iPod shuffle is geared more as an iPod companion. I'm looking into buying one for it's flash (mainly) and MP3 capabilities. I already have a 3gen10 gig and am probably going to purchase a 40 gig or 60 gig quite soon...

Nope.

I need a flash player for working out and knocking around, but why would I get the iPod Shuffle, when I can get a 512MB Creative Muvo Micro with a screen, FM radio, 15 hour battery life, EQ, and many other features that the iPod Shuffle doesn't have, for only $20 more?

And IMHO it looks cool also.

It's all I need, and exactly what I need for flying and yard work. My 3G iPod can stay out of harm's way. One 1 GB shuffle is on the way.

I bought one mainly because I needed a flash drive. I was looking at a Lexar 1G for $120cnd and the 1G Shuffle cost $178 after student discount so it was a no brainer. I have 4G 20 Ipod and an IHP-120 both of which are not really workout friendly.

I'll get one in Feb. just to use for cycling/active stuff.
Won't have to worry about crashing with the 20gb, when i can stuff the shuffle down my shirt/bra. :p

I will be getting one as well. Its perfect for jogging and when Iam on the go because I don't want to risk dropping my ipod photo.

Its so small and light I can just stick it in my shirt pocket! (you can't do that with most/if any other flash players ;) ) I can't wait to get mine :D

Am I buying? You bet.

Why?

-- In my opinion, this thing is gorgeous. That MuVo thing is butt-ugly, inelegant and harder to use.

-- What's the deal with wanting a radio? A DAP should be your own personal radio station that plays your favorite music all the time. I don't understand the fascination with a radio.

-- A cheap voice recorder costs about $30; if I want one I'll get one.

-- My wife and I go to the gym at different times, so we can share it and use our iPods in safer situations.

-- I want a 1GB flash drive anyway.

-- I love Apple.

I think they're right on the money with this product. No screen means no scratch worries and cheaper price, plus no fidgeting with it at the gym. No battery means no worrying about replacement and all you have to do is pop it in a USB port.

I'm sold. Can't wait.

seems like a lot of people who already have a 'real' iPod will be getting a shuffle for use where the iPod (normal or mini) is too impractical to use ie gym, etc.

so apple will benefit from it's existing customer base, as well as all the new 'converts' that want to be part of this iPod 'movement' ;)

anyone who bought shares in apple at the beginning of 2004 and is still holding onto them must be pretty pleased with themselves...!

I love the iPod shuffle and ordered one as my "gym" iPod (to go with my 3G I currently have.) BUT FM radio would be a GREAT addition for the gym... many gyms have TVs where in order to hear audio you need to tune to an FM station and it would be an ideal feature to include. However obvious it is Apple remains the only company NOT to include it as a feature because they think (perhaps rightly so, sadly) that having FM radio access would cut back on the need to buy iTunes music store songs (for example to hear the latest hits.)

i think the ad's like life is random, the size, weight, the fact that no one i know have one so i can feel good, is really getting to me.. i like randomness... i just won't put whole cd's on there.

I love my 20gig iPod, I've had it for over a year but I will still buy the iPod Shuffle. Who cares that it doesnt have a screen, it's not intended for selecting music...it is what it says it is. Let it randomly throw some music on then go kayaking, fishing, hiking, running....whatever...and enjoy your music without worrying about damaging your $400 iPod. I'll be buying!

Some other colors would have been nice... I can live without a screen, but is it really that hard to make other colors??? I mean, that could have been another really good selling point. If they can make the mini in different colors, I think that making the shuffle in other fun colors wouldn't be that hard.

I might think of getting one, but the color issue is a real deal-breaker for me.

BINGO! The "Shuffle" isn't an "upgrade" to the current iPod offerings. Actually, it's a DOWNGRADE allowing people who can't afford a "normal" iPod to buy into the iPod/Apple name / buy an otherwise out of range iPod and also for those of us who are gym rats/joggers/athletes/etc.

I think it was devious of Apple... talk about a cash cow. I think I'm going to have a hand at some Apple stock. The iPod Shuffle is going to be a behemoth at the cash register.

No don't buy AAPL, leave it all for me. My earnings today alone (paper earnings anyway) were enough to buy A LOT of shuffles!

I can't wait for Target to get the Shuffle. It's cheap enough for people to say "Aw heck, what's all the fuss about anyway?" and just buy one. Then it starts. This is a gateway drug and I can't wait to get the world hooked!

The way I see it, for 512 MB, this would make great use as a portable USB flash drive, and having MP3 playback is a bonus. Yet this would be perfect for my father would only listens a few albums on walks each weekend.

No LCD? Haven't you guys survived cassette Walkmans and CD players that only display the track number? I don't think it's too much of a deal.

I can get one right now, but I'm still undecided. But man, I really want that Mac mini.

Cassette players had 15songs in them. Easier to get to them. Plus you know exactly which song comes where (most of the time)

It would have made more sense on a 128mb device. As the size is growing larger, you need more "navigation".

Why do you think the later CD-Mp3 players had atleast a 1 line display ?

Hope your dad isn't the complaining type :) ... Look for options thats all I meant to say...

The problem with this forum is that we're all converts. Apple could bring a organ grinding cheese monkey and we'd swoon over it. I don't see how the shuffle is any better than it's rivals at this point.

i think the shuffle is a good idea for people who dont have super huge musci collections and its also cheaper
also its good for going to the gym and i quite lke the design

i wouldnt buy one of these at the moment but might be tempted if they go down in price
but i doubt that for a long while

I have ordered the 1GB iPod shuffle to complement my 4G iPod 40GB (at times where I don't feel like lugging my 4G iPod). It will also double-up as my flash drive.

It doesn't really bother me that there is no screen. I hardly look at the screen of my 4G iPod anyway as it is mostly inside my pocket. Mine is preset to "Shuffle" and my 2 commonly used buttons are "Play/Pause" and "Skip". I have already downloaded all my favourite songs into iTunes. So whichever songs and sequence that iTunes autofill my iPod shuffle would suit me fine.

I have done an informal survey here (http://www.macuser.org.sg/yabbse/index.php?topic=19675.msg135060#msg135060). As you can see, quite a number of the existing iPod owners are getting one and 1GB seems to be the popular choice. ;)

I ordered the 512mb. I have a 15GB iPod now, that I love, but I got the shuffle for the sole purpose of being able to throw it in my pocket, and not notice its there. The 15GB can stay in my car, while the shuffle is perfect for on the go. I got the smaller shuffle because I want to be able to autofill it, get through a playlist, then fill it again! If I want my library, I'll pull out my 15GB.

jpod999
01-14-2005, 10:55 PM
I will be getting one for the sole purpose of just my favorite songs. Right now I am really into classic rock and so it will probably be mostly filled up with that. I am most likely going to use it on the shuffle feature the whole time, just because it would be nicer. I also just have GOT to have one of these! ;)

Would be nice to get a Mac mini also, but I don't have enough money for one.

I love my mini, so I won't be getting one for myself, but I think I might get one for each of my parents. I had them try a few other players and they just didn't want to deal with the extra features and UI. I think the Shuffle will be perfect for them. They're only used to dealing with tapes, so play, fastforward, rewind, stop is all they need. They'll probably just play it through rather than using the shuffling, but it's just one new thing they can get used to. Along with the simplicity, the size and price is good too.
