View Full Version : White ear phones - Wouldn't be caught dead with them

I guess it's my age (mid-30's). I see this as a sign of growth (ie less vanity) but perhaps it could be a sign of regression.
Since the iPod was the "it" gift of last Christmas I wouldn't be caught dead with a pair of white headphones.
I'm sure in my youth I would have been proud to show off the white headphones, but now that everyone and their grandmother's sister has one they just seem way too played out.
Oh sure before Christmas they were still cool, but now it just seems they are the "look-at-me-I'm-a-Johny-come-lately" device.
I liken this to the old "I've been with this band since the beginning" attitude that I so hate. You know the guys that stop listening to a band because they get too popular. Make no sense I know.
So I covertly wear a pair of inexpensive (but kick-###) black Sony head phones and discretely keep my iPod mini in my coat pocket. I know what I got, I just don't care what other people think.

Hehe yeah. I got my iPod back in May of 2004 when it was not as popular as it is right now. So back then I still kind of had that 'different' factor. Now that everybody has an iPod since it is the best portable player on the market I kinda feel like I'm the same as everybody else :( Guess I just like being different from the crowd like you. But hey, I picked up some Sony headphones myself (see sig) and use them now, lol. I wouldn't use those white headphones - not because they are white - but because their quality sucks.

Ummm... you have an iPod Mini... obviously you haven't been "with the band" for too long. :D
Unless, of course, you have a hidden stash of REAL iPods in your closet or something. Hehe! ;)
As far as the white earbuds everywhere, I agree. I've been wearing white earbuds (and the in-ear 'phones) for a year now (I know, feel sorry for me because the sound is shi**y) and I never drew many stares until AFTER Xmas... people that couldn't afford or find an iPod are envious and stare. It's annoying because I've been going a year under the radar with only a few people taking stock of my white earphones...
... now I can't leave the house without running into people that want to stop and ask me if I got an iPod- (espeically at the gym or in line somewhere). Like I'm going to whip out my $399+ iPod for a total stranger, man or woman, on the street! Yeah right. I just look at them like their crazy and keep walking. (I refuse to get mugged or harassed for my iPod).
Anyway, you're not going to like it now with Apple releasing the iPod Shuffle!. Hahaha! Now all the cash strapped wannabes that couldn't even afford a Mini are going to be running out to snatch up the bottom of the price barrel iPod Shuffle. You think you see a ton of white headphones now?!? Give it a few more weeks an it'll be COMPLETELY out of control.
Good for Apple sales, but bad for the brand = Played out.
Oh, and you might want to take a look at Apple's official stance directly from the iPod Shuffle's official page:
"...and those signature white earbud headphones tell the world you love to listen in style."
What a laugh...
And the frenzy begins...

I'm pretty much the same way. I didn't want to advertise that I had an iPod in my pocket, so I got black Sony noise-canceling earphones. I didn't think the sound quality coming out of the supplied Apple earphones were all that great, so an upgrade was necessary.

I know what I got, I just don't care what other people think.
But in a sense, you do care because you don't want people to think you're a "Johny-come-lately".
I guess this is the beginning of the generation of closet iPod users :)

i my honest opinion, i don't like the white earbuds at all. sure they have that cool white look to them and everything, but the sound quality isn't great, and they're uncomfortable over long periods of time. i picked up a pair of sony "studio monitor" headphones for 20 USD and i have no complaints. i think they have more overall volume than my 20 GB ipod though anyway

It's sad that so many people are forced to:
1. Buy other headphones because in general those included earbuds SUCK!
2. People don't want to wear even Ety white headphones for fear of looking like a "wannabe" or a trend-hound...
I personally wear whatever I want and don't give a damn what other people think... but now that everybody and their baby-daddy has white headphones I'm more worried about a potential rash of iPod thefts that so many people are cautioning about...

Ehhh.... I don't care what people think of me when travelling. I use my white earbuds to hear the music, I don't care what they look like as long as the sound is ok.

I don't giva damn what people think of me, but I like white earphones because they match the iPod. I am very into having everything match. I would rather have a pair of the white Etys instead of the stock buds, though. I don't really think it makes me a bad person for wanting the earphones to match, but if it does, who cares? I'll do what I want anyway!

If you buy new headphones soley on the fact that the iPod ones are popular, I pity you.

It's like my whole school got iPods for Christmas, and everyone has the crappy "stock" headphones.
It's like an iPod army, it's scary! I was one of the few with an iPod, now I like to call myself a vintage iPoder because I think i'm like the only person with a 3G :p Everyone's like, "HOLY CRAP YOURS IS DIFFERENT!" Then I have to explain how it's older...

Uh, pardon me, being a Johnny Come Lately and all, but is it that big of a friggin deal? I have wanted an iPod since they came out, but am a gadget nut, and it was midway down my list. I got around to buying one at Christmas time, and like it, and use it everywhere... maybe things are different here, but I have yet to have someone who wasn't using an iPod at the time comment. As for the remarks about the iPod shuffle... I plan on buying one soon, and am not hurting for money... not everyone can afford these expensive toys so why crack insults about those who go for the lower version?

Everyone at my school who has an iPod(at least 20 people I have seen) wears the stupid white headphones. It's so weird. Those headphones suck, don't stay in my ear well, and has a poor sound output and sound like ####. When I had my iPod, I just threw them in my desk drawer and they still sit there today, still bundled up in that plastic packaging, unopened. I used my noise-cancelling Seinheisser's instead. It's so funny at school with my Carbon, someone sees it and asks "What kind of iPod is that??!?!?!?!?" or "You got an iPod too?" or "What is the difference between a Carbon iPod and normal iPod?". People are so stupid...

LOL that wasn't directed towards you. I say the more iPod users, no matter what form, the better. I am a PC and Mac user, and in the computer field, and frankly, Apple needs the market share here - if people are too smitten with Windows to realize that the mac OS is superior in many ways as well as the hardware, they should still have part of an apple dominatd field in their posession - hence the ipod.

I'll be honest... I've had my iPod for nearly 15 months now. Back then, no one really had one around me.. I wore the stocks and carried the iPod around, trying to show it off.. Now turn the clock ahead to the present day.. I'd say 200 people in my school alone now own an iPod. It is getting ridiculous to see the amount of people with them.. I now try to hide my iPod, because it is so annoying seeing this trend around, everyone flaunting this white machine around.. I know that the majority of these bought it to be cool and follow the trend (it's their money, who am I to judge..), but I would prefer not to be grouped with these people, as I know that I did not get one to follow the trend, there simply was none when I got mine..
No harm mean to any newer users around here as everyone has their reasons to get one, but I at least know at my school that I would rather not be grouped with the multitude of imbeciles that own one...

I have never, ever flaunted my iPod. I have worn the white buds but always covered them up. Safety measures. Like Dan and many others, people at my school that got them are full fledged idiots. I do not seek to be aquanted with them in any way.

Dude I would not worry about it one bit. Take my original post for example. I'm obviously making a tounge in cheek social commentary and most people took it as such. yet there is always one or two hyper sensitive a-holes who act as if I made a personal insult to their mother. It's just the nature of the internet. Funny standing in line in a public place people never act this way but get behind the keyboard and it's "screw you and everyone who looks like you, I hope you die die die a thousand times"

It's getting to the point, where if I see black buds, I'll know it's an iPod. :p

LOL! Even Apple openly states that the white earbuds are a fashion statement as well as to let the "whole world know you listen in style". LOL! :D

Yea, everyone at my school got an iPod also. Worse thing is, they all got a mini. Now, I'm not against the mini's all that much, I just think that for $50 more you could get at least 4 times as much space. So when Christmas came around, a lot of people who wanted iPods asked me about mine, since I was one of the only kids who actually had one then. Anyways, they'd ask me about the mini, and I'd try to convince them that the regular version would suit their needs more, $50 isn't that much money, especially to most parents. But none of them listened to me, and they got Mini's. Which really sucks when they actually start to build a big musical library. I would suggest Mini's to adults, (like 30 years old on) since most likely, their musical tastes wont change a lot, but to a kid, I say no way.
Anyways, I'm not embarrased about my white headphones. Most people know that I've had an iPod for a while, and if they don't believe me, they can take a look at my 3G and see all the scratches (I call them battle scars) that have accumalated over the months.
Plus, we can feel special again once the 5G iPods come out, which I intend to buy right away. And since it most likely wont come out till Christmas season (or later), all the people who got 4G's wont get one since they'll already have one.

I consider myself an original...bought mine in November 2001 and never looked back. It doesn't matter to me whether people think I joined the club or am an original...I know it...that's all that matters.

I agree. Apple and Steve Jobs deserves all the success they get. The music industry was freaking out when Napster and mp3s got big and here coems along Steve Jobs and turns into somethign everyone can be happy with.
Same goes for Pixar, thanks to Steve for bringing the next Hollywood to the Bay Area.
Nwo if only he could buy teh 49ers.
