This might be a silly question, but is there any way to shorten a headphone cord (ie by cutting the cord and re-soldering it or something)? I've found my favourite headphones in stores always seem to have a 10' cord which is a bit too long for something that goes from my pocket to my head.
Also, any opinions on the Sony MDRV300 headphones?
Thanks.

Please let me know if anyone replies to your email, I am quite interested in shortening my cord as I bought an ipod nano and think it defeates the purpose of buying such a small unit when you have to stuff seven feet of cord in your pocket with the player. I wish I could give you some useful information but I am in the same boat as you, I must wait for someone who knows. I do know that there are two wires leading to each individual earphone; maybe all headphones are like this, maybe they aren't, but it doesn't look like you can cut and sodder as you would think you could.

Riley,
I had a better response when i asked it on ask.metafilter.com. The general consensus was that it is technically possible but practically impossible to do properly.
I wish I could do it though-- those headphones are still favourites of mine, but the cord is huge (and the fact that it is thick makes wrapping it up a less attractive option).
I don't know if posting links will work but here is the thread:

Well, looking at the thread, some suggest it is possible but they say to remove the one end (either at the headphone end or the plug end) and shorten there. Unfortunately I am not skilled at soldering and so I have been afraid to risk my headphones trying.
