I was wondering if anybody knows if it is possible to use the Gen 1 iPod with a PC. I know there was a PC version but I'm not sure how to tell which is which. The problem is that I'm asking in behalf of a friend of mine who is a native of Costa Rica. So is it maybe possible to update the firmware of any Gen 1 so that it might work on a PC?
Thanks,
Andrew

The 1st generation iPods (5GB models) are system-specific, meaning if you want to use one with a Mac, you must purchase the Macintosh-specific model... likewise, if you wanna use it with a Windows PC, you much purchase the Windows-specific model.
AFAIK, there is no way to use a Macintosh-specific model with a PC, nor a PC-specific model with a Macintosh.
There is software out there that will let a Windows machine "read" a Mac-formatted disk -- this may help in using a Mac-specific 1G iPod with a Windows machine, but you'd be stuck manually copying the songs to and from the iPod. That would take the simplicity of use out of using it, though. Plus, there's no guarantee it'll work.
Here's an article on reformatting a 10GB iPod for Windows as well as some software solutions for making a Windows PC recognize a Mac-formatted iPod.

The 1st generation iPods (5GB), AFAIK, cannot be reformatted from Macintosh to PC or vice-versa.
