I am running winXP SP2 all adware/spyware/viruses removed and all updated. I installed Apples newest itunes 4.7 from the website along with the new ipod software. My computer is up to date with drivers etc. Well exceeds minimum requirements. I have 1GB ram, 250GB HD P4 3.2 I followed the directions exactly from the site. When I install the ipod USB itunes doesn't recognize it but yet under My Computer it is there. I even disabled my antivirus (AVG) and also (ZA) and tried it with the same outcome. Yet on my brothers laptop which is the same b/c I set it up. He is able to install his ipod w/o a problem but if I try to connect his ipod into my comp it does the same thing with the ipod I spoke about earlier. please help. I even tried restoring the software. thanks

I have the exact same problem, just got my ipod for christmas. I have tried several times to add songs but ipod is not recognized by my itunes , have to use ipod updater and restore my entire ipod everytime for itunes to recognize my ipod, loosing all my songs every time I want to just add songs. This is a pain since I don't want to keep my entire library on my itunes (even my computer for space is a premium).

My situation is exactly the same as yours. iTunes simply will not recognize my iPod on my PC running XP, even though the computer sees it's plugged in. My laptop runs XP as well and I have no problems with my iPod on it. Very frustrating, so I do hope someone has some suggestions for us.

Just out of curiousity, does your hard drive have an unconventional letter designated? My main drive is not C but E, and I have had a few problems with this and other software previously. I don't see how this could be causing the problem in this case, but thought it worth asking.

Thanks to the original poster, and anyone that can help us.

I'm still working on the various options but after trying most of them so far, none have worked. Has anyone actually solved this?

Thanks.

Hi bacchus,

I had exactly the same problem and funnily enough it was your drive letter comment which put me onto the solution. My primary harddrive is E:, seconday F:, so XP mounted my iPod as drive C: (strange, but there you are). It was this that was causing the problem.

I connected my iPod to my PC, then went to Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management, then right clicked on the iPod and changed the mount letter to G (if you only have one harddrive and it is mounted as E, you probably want to choose F as your iPod letter). I then ejected the iPod using Explorer (right click on the iPod and select Eject) and disconnected it. Then I launched iTunes and plugged the iPod back in again - voila!

Let me know if this sorts you out.
