I got an ipod 20gig for Christmas. Discovered I needed to upgrade to XP> then found that my usb ports were the earlier versions so got card that has both firewire and usb 2 ports. tMy computer said everything was working when I tried to install itunes and format my ipod it would hang at waiting for ipod. Took the ipod to the apple store- they said it worked fine and it did with their apple system. Ended up taking the computer to a teck who said that dell has problems managing the ipod or the usb 2/firewire connection and that my bios had to be flashed. So at this point I'm out almost as much as the ipod cost in the first place.
Brought it home worked fine with the firewire connection but not the usb connection. So now I will have to buy an extra firewire connection if I want to use my ac charger. or connect and unconnect the firewire which is a hassle cause the connection is in the back of my computer. Any suggestions that wont cost morre money? Sorry for the length of this.

You could use your old USB 1.1 ports. Apple doesn't recommend it, but they don't say why not. It works, just slower than the USB 2.0 ports.

i tried plugging in a dell memory stick to a g5 mac (how foolish of me). but then the mac didn't recongnize the mem stick and it had imp audio files for my movie...so i had to transfer that stuff to my non mac hatin mem stick and it was fine...what i just said had nothing to do with the topic but its cool. try reinstalling the usb drivers for your ipod...and not the firewire drivers. that should do the trick...but if that doesnt work might as do what polar said and use old usb ports(eww.)
