Can anyone help with My Ipod Problem?

Recently my 2nd Gen 10 gig Ipod (used via 6 pin firewire) was working perfectly but recently it???s been sick, quite possibly irreversibly!

I have the most recent Update from Apple.com at the time the problem started (version 1.4).

I recently took it to a friend???s house and tried downloading some of his music using the Ipod plug-in that is available with winamp. Now the problem started here, his PC is set up with XP Pro with service pack 2, anyway the Ipod was recognised and was working fine but suddenly it blue screened. Once this happened there seemed to be a problem as when it restarted his Soundcard seemed to have been blown (was making no sound but worked fine after a reboot but has been erratic since). Once the PC was restarted the Ipod was not recognised by the PC and the Ipod just indicated that it was "OK to disconnect" and the hard drive just spins. After many attempts this just could not be reversed and the Ipod was still not recognised by his PC. Anyway after giving up with the thought of taking it home to sort the problem out (My PC runs XP Pro with SP1) I plugged it in with the exact same effect - the Ipod was not recognised and it indicated that it was OK to disconnect with the hard drive whirring away. Even if I try charging the Ipod just using the adapter it starts fine goes through the boot up but as soon as the menu comes up it instantly restarts and goes back to the OK to disconnect screen because of this I cannot even access the Ipod Updater as it says that the Ipod is not connected. Although it does indicate that the battery is charging which it does but the charge is not held even if turned off.

So far to try and get it working properly again I have tried:

Resetting the Ipod (via Menu)

Have tried all of the diagnostic tools by pressing (Menu Start/Pause and then forward/back and the middle button) which it passed.

Dismantling the Ipod and disconnecting the battery without problems.

At present the Ipod Works fine in respect that it plays the MP3s that I put on before the problem but it just will not connect to my PC and the battery seems to have half the life that it used to. But only ever since this problem has it been doing this.

I guess what I would ideally like to know is this:

Is there anyway of resetting the Ipod to its factory default without accessing the software via PC?

Could it be a possibility that the Firewire connector is blown?

Any help that could be offered would be fantastic, hopefully we can get the old girl fixed - otherwise ill fix it with a hammer!!

Sorry about the length of the post but I searched the forums and found similar problems but nothing suggested has fixed the problem.

Any Suggestions?

Ok Looks like my ipod needs repair after taking the thing apart and seeing that a chip has blown.

I am from the UK and would be interested in finding out how much it would cost to get it repaired.

Would anyone have a ballpark figure?
