Ok, well, I just put two new Mariah songs on my iPod (two songs that were downloaded from the internet - from an unreleased album) - and when I search by artist on my iPod - her name comes up twice instead of once - the first one has all of her albums in it - and the second one has the two tracks that I just added - under the new album title - so I went and made a new folder in the "Mariah" section in my iTunes library on my hard drive where all of my cd's are - and still, her name is listed twice - and it's not featuring anyone - so I don't get it. Spelling is fine, and the tags are fine as well. They are also all the same format.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

In itunes, click on 'browse'. Go to whichever Mariah has all of her albums. Choose get info from one of the songs, highlight and copy the artist name. Go to the other Mariah (the one with two songs), highlight and paste it in the artist space. If once you click 'ok' all Mariah's are together, celebrate by having a beer.

If not, drink more beer and pass out in a state of bliss.

thanks for the help!! it worked GREAT - it's strange though - do you know why it did that? By looking at the artist name - they were identical - but somehow copying and pasting it from one of her "real" albums worked - I did the same thing with another artist before Mariah - and this didn't happen.

Most likely the new tracks that you added had some non-printable characters in the artist name (the most common cause is blank spaces at the end). Since the strings aren't exactly identical, iTunes lists them as two different artists.

oh, ok - so there was characters probably that I couldn't see - that makes sense - thanks - it was driving me crazy!
