I was having a problem with my otherwise perfect mini where, all of a sudden, after about 6 months without any incident, the menu button stopped working . . . reading posts on the Apple Discussion boards and here, suggested toggling back and forth several times the hold button, then resetting. I did so and it fixed the menu button problem. Something about the mini needing to recalibrate.
Now, on my daily runs with the mini in the Apple armband, I'm just going to lock in my selection with the hold button as sort of 'preventive maintenance.'
Hope this helps someone else.

That shouldn't have anything to do with it. You only toggle the hold button to make sure it's not stuck when you try to reset. What solved your problem was resetting, not flicking the hold button.

Actually, the hold button does help in that situation some. When you lock and unlock the hold button, essentially, you are reseting the clickwheel. One of the problems that people sometimes have is that the clickwheel acts funny, this is usually caused by touching the clickwheel when you toggle the hold switch on and off. Your essentially calibrating the clickwheel to that position, either making it non-responsive or act weird. The clickwheel is powered by the touch and heat of your fingers, and the hold switch turns off the clickwheel, so when you think about it, essentialy, like any other on/off switch, you turn it back on and it need to recalibrate itself.
Thank you for that clarification. Obviously, I did not know that.

A word of warning though, I think too much use of the Hold switch may be bad. Mine now seems to have a loose contact as, if left on Hold it just sits and merriy toggles between on and off Hold until the battery runs flat. It's going back today though. Hopefully it's replacement won't take too long as I'm stuck with the MP3 player on my phone until it does!
