great ipod car install

I found this really cool car install someone did on their VW GTI. I really like how he ran the power from the 12V source in the trunk. Looks very clean.

Its a clean install. Gives some good info on where people who want to use thier stock stereo to work with the Ipod need to go. It also points out that if you really want to enjoy your ipod using the belkin is the only way to go.

Here's mine (previously posted) for an '01 Civic. Since the original posting, I've concealed most of the audio cabling, although I didn't stash the Belkin charger because I travel and take it to use in rental cars in conjunction with a Gruv-X FM transmitter.

One handy tip - if you're having problems with the 1/8" jack coming out of the line-out port on the Belkin, split the pair of wires just behind the mini-jack on your RCA -> 1/8" cable. Stick a velcro cable-tie through there and wrap up and around the Belkin tightly. No more shaking the cable loose going over a bump.

I agree that the Belkin is the way to go. No need to adjust the volume on your iPod - once you've dialed in the right volume on the Belkin line-out, you're golden. Also, at least in my Civic, a ground loop isolator didn't help - without the Belkin, it just wouldn't work.

huh? condensation only forms on things when the ambiet air is warmer than that thing. so, if airconditioning is blowing over the ipod, it's not possible for the ipod to become cooler than the air blowing over it.

Yes. I bought a piece that mounts to the passenger side of the center console from Clair Parts (http://www.clairparts.com) . The part is made specifically for my Audi and it was pricey!!! $80. It is a cell phone mount and I bought a cheap cell phone holder from Radio Shack, as a matter of fact it is the same holder (air conditioner mount) as in rasc post. I just removed the plastic piece on the back in order to super glue it flush to the mount.


It looks much better in person! The wow factor is incredible the first time people see it....

I got this same Radio Shack vent cellphone kit. I don't want to do anything messy and permanent in my car. But I cannot figure out how to get this thing to stay. I've had vent mount things before (different car, that was a Honda Civic), but for some reason I can't see how to get this to stay put in my Saab.

Did you have any trouble? Is there some trick I should know? I stick it in the vents, it seems really stable. I drive around. Then suddenly BAM! everything's on the floor. . .

That's the image of the holder. You have to make sure that it clicks VERY well. Mine's stayed and I drive on BUMPY roads. Good Luck with yours

Looks like the Belkin Auto Kit.

The auto kit is basically a cigarette-lighter adapter with a built in preamp. 3rd generation iPods can send audio out through the dock connector (that is, after all, how the 1/8 inch connector on the dock itself works).

ken, i got my mount from my local sprint pcs store. it's a cell phone holder. surprisingly, it was only $15. anyways, it's a very versatile mount. it can be mounted by the provided screws or adhesive tape. it has a ball-in-socket joint which allows the ipod to rotate freely. it has a quick release button. it has foam gripping on the base and sides to provide a scatch free secure grip. i will post some more pics of the mount.

That's a long way to go for power when the fuse box is right next to the driver's door and there are tons of other power sources in the dash...

Yeah, I wouldn't call that a clean install at all. Routing the power from the trunk? That's ridiculous. Two wire taps and you've got power anywhere in the front of the car (fuse panel or an existing 12V socket). If you don't want to solder anything, you can get a female 12V cigarette lighter socket from Radioshack and tap in with that.

When I was talking to an Apple Rep at CompUSA, he told me that he uses the docking station in his car and uses the line out to route the sound to his stereo. He said that the sound output was greater from the line out because the headphone jack damps the output to prevent people from blowing their eardrums out (some law requires it).
I tried it, and it really does make a difference! It sounds as loud now at vol level 40 on the stereo than it did before at 60!

Those of you using the Belkin charger with the line in - do you hear an increase in the sound versus the headphone jack. I dont think so, since the Belkin adapter probably has the damping on it too...but I was just wondering.

I mostly just wanted people to know about the sound difference...

Are there any really cool dock setups out there?

I've got mine in front of the gear shift, fastened down with heavy duty velcro and a short Monster cable running to the aux in on the stereo. Just thought I'd get some ideas from other people.....

The belkin charger is not a true unamplified line-out though. The line-out on the belkin is amplified, thus the higher volume. A charger with a true un amplified line-out is either the sik imp or monster charger. I use the sik imp and i get greater sound quality wit it then that of the belkin.

nice clean install, but isnt it difficult changing songs. Even though mine is a little more messy changing songs and even playing teh games while in traffic are extremely easy.

Actually, changing songs is quite easy. Since I like to listen to most of my playlists in random order, I just hit the FWD button. Changing playlists, however is a bit more cumbersome. If I need to do that I'll either do it when I'm stopped, in slow traffic or I'll just pick the iPod up and re-dock it after I'm done.

Haven't you ever noticed some days when you first turn the AC on that some mist can come out of the vents? That's what that person is talking about.
