Is your iPod in Manual sync mode ??
The Enable disk use greys out when the iPod is set to manual.
IIRC disk use is a requirement for Manual sync anyway so have a look in Windows Explorer and see if it showing as a drive.
If not set the iPod to Auto sync and then enable it, just bear in mind that Auto sync will make iTunes and the iPod content exactly the same.

my ipod's primary purpose is to store my music and files. i was wonderin why i couldn't click the enable disk use button. thanks to aquatika i found out why. but i'd still like to manage my songs manually. so i found that if you go to the ipod drive in "my computer" all you have to do is to show the hidden files. then you can transfer songs from ipod to pc. i hope this helps out!
