tech support tried formatting it w/ me but they couldnt get it to in fat 32 (or whatever its called) so now i have 2 take it to the apple store which will be in a few days...does anyone know how to do it a dif way? we tried it through device manage i think and the line where fat 32 shoulda been was blank and we tried anothe way and all it said was nfts i think... sorry my memory is a bit blury . he told me that xp only allows for formatting up to 32 gigs mine is a 40 gig. there must be a way or does every1 w/ a forty gig have to take it to an apple store or send it in to get it formatted? please help!!!! this all might be confusing but im tired and frustrated ive had this thing going on 4 days w/ 4 calls to tech service and it still doesnt work!!!!!! also im getting a "firmware update failure disk write error" when i try to update ...i thought i would throw that in to...so as of now my ipod is a great PAPER WEIGHT!!!!!! thx 2 every1 in advance

Sounds like the Apple store is your best option, if you can't reformat using the iPod updater then there may be a problem with the hard drive in your iPod.
You shouldn't have to try and use Windows to format an iPod to Fat32 by yourself, something is wrong and it would be better for you to get it checked out or replaced if it is still under warranty.
As a Windows user you should be able to access all of the iPods storage just by using Apples updater.
Good luck anyway.

I found this article on the Microsoft KB. While it won't solve your problem, it might help you to understand it a little better.
