Just bought a new IPOD and installed the software, when it says to connect the ipod, I do and hit OK and nothing happens. It's suppose to be "configuring the IPOD" but nothing happens. I'm running windows 2000 professional with service pack 4 which is what it says I need and yes I do have usb 2.0. My usb ports all work because I have a printer attached and I also use a canon digital camera and it always recognizes the camera and it works fine.
Any ideas

I have Windows 2000, sp 4 and two iPods (on a Dell notebook).
First step:
Is the iPod charged-up...... if not, either charge it up first or have it connected to the A/C outlook when you connect it to the USB port.

It was 1/2 charged according to the battery indicator so I don't think that was the problem. I don't have it in front of me but I thought when you were charging it, it used the same connector as the usb connection did so how can you be charging it from a wall plug and at the same time connect it to a usb port? Sorry, I don't have it in front of me right now to verify that.
I did a search and apparently alot of people are having the same problems getting their's to be seen via the usb port. I ordered a firewire pci card interface from newegg last night so hopefully that will be my work around.

There is a split cord you can get (most all of us 3rd gen owners had to) that allows USB connection and A/C plug in at the same time.

Well I doubt the fact that it was only 1/2 charged would cause this issue, that does not make any sense. We tried doing the reset thing per the manual, made no difference, uninstalled the software and reinstalled numerous times, made no difference.
Anyone with any other suggestions to try. It's a little disturbing that so many other people are having the exact same issue.

I also had that problem. Usually it would take me 20 mins for anything to work or start up.
My other problem now is after successfully restoring it to the latest Updater and syncing my files, I try to connect my iPod to my computer again through the USB 2.0 port, it says that my iPod needs to be reformated to be recognised!! I cannot believe this!
Does that mean every time I need to restore my iPod everytime I want to connect it up to my iTunes??? Man, this is really a crap software/firmware.

Having to restore your iPod is not suppose to be a regular thing..... there is still something wrong with your PC trying to talk with the iPod.

what you need to do is get the latest patches from microsoft. i had issues with my usb 2.0 card as well, my ipod was recognized by windows but itunes did not see it. i did a windows update, got the latest patches and what not, rebooted my pc and everything works fine.

I'm seriously wondering if I should install a Firewire card. Will need to talk to the Apple service staff tomorrow.

I'm running service pack 4 so I should have the latest usb drivers/patches. My firewire will be here Monday from newegg.

Are you sure it's telling you to connect it to the computer? Because at one point during the setup process you need to plug the iPod into the AC Adaptor. Until you do that, the iPod won't be configured for use with a Windows PC.

I install the software, during that process it pops up a window and says connect your ipod and hit OK, in the back ground another window sits and says "configuring ipod" but it does nothing. You wait and wait or click multiple times on the Ok button and nothing ever happens.
At no point does it say to connect to the ac charger in my instructions.

Ah, OK. I guess you haven't yet gotten to the point where it needs to be connected to the AC Adaptor. Sorry, I don't have any other ideas for you.

Ok, bought the firewire interface and the ipod works fine on it. In the meantime, my son used a Dell laptop and downloaded songs onto his new IPOD via the usb port on the laptop. So when we connected his ipod to my pc with the firewire, it connected just fine but it wiped out all the songs he had downloaded. How do you switch between different pc's to download songs without it wiping out your songs on your ipod?
