Ok here's the deal. I have Win98se and a 2 40 GB IPODs + HP.
One is hooked up via USB 2.0 to one computer and the other is hooked up to Firewire on another computer. When I try to access the IPOD from Realplayer 10.5, I can't --- i.e. I can't "drag and drop" things to the device in the CD Burn/Transfer menu.
But, if I install Xplay2 on both machines, when I look under My Computer, the disk icon has a little red apple on it and now Realplayer works. So, my question is, is there another way to get the "red apple icon" or whatever to make it work in Realplayer. BTW, I tried to run the installer (3.0.2?) but things have changed so that I can't find the "updater.exe" file and there is no Welcome screen to bail and copy the file, anyway. Basically,
it just errors out because I have Win98se.

You have to "Update" your iPods on some Windows 2000/XP machine. After that you won't need to use Xplay.
Remember, updating removes all music from iPod.

OK, I have to "update", even though this is the "HP" verison and it is already formatted for Windows?

I know it sounds strange, but HP iPod is initially Mac formatted.
Really.

Don't you mean iPod?!?! iPAQ is there (HP'S) Brand of PDA's.
And no I have to disagree with you. I don't know in what condition HP gets there iPods (if they ever see them or not!).
but the hPod's are in fact shiped out PC FAT16 formated.
Only the orignal Apple iPods are shiped in the customary Mac HFS+ Format.

All I know is that when I put XPLAY2 on my PC, Realplayer can not download to the IPOD otherwise, no go. It seems like if it wasn't formatted for the PC I would get a nasty message saying that the drive is not formatted. This doesn't happen, even without XPLAY2. So, do I have to "update" it, or not?

I'd update it. It won't harm. Remember about backing up valuable data from iPod before.
Write to this forum whether it helped. In my opinion HP iPods are Mac-formatted initially but there are other opinions. I'm very curious.

Hey ohm, you were correct! I used an XP machine to update both IPODs and now they work perfectly with RealPlayer and without XPLAY2 needed. Thanks.
