Very soon i will be purchasing a iPod 20GB 4th generation, and was wondering about the connection, at present i believe that i use USB 1.1 ports which as i understans are not compatiable with the iPod. At present all my USB ports are currently being used the 2 on the front of the dell comp and the 2 at the back. I was thinking of getting wither a USB 2.0 or a firewire card to replace the ones in the back, but with probably about 4 ports. The problem is im not sure if firewire ports are shaped differently therefore stopping me from connecting up the devices connected at the moment. I dont know maybe the ports i do have at present will suport USB 2.0 but doubt it as i got the comp in 2000.
If any one can help me with this problem it'd be class cheers
Paul

I have the same problem, only got USB 1.1... I don't think I can even upgrade, my laptop doesn't seem to have any slots for USB/firewire cards, or are they the type of thing that would need the laptop to be opened?

iPods are indeed compatible with USB 1.1, Apple just doesn't make it public as they don't want the consumer to think the iPods have slow transfer speeds.. It will transfer, but it will go slow and leave you with something to be desired. If you don't have too much music then don't sweat it, otherwise you may need to invest in USB 2.0 or FireWire.. Also it most likely will not allow your iPod to charge through USB 1.1, but in some cases, depending on the card, it will charge..

As for the laptop if you want to have USB 2.0 on them you could buy a USB hub such as these (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=USB+Hub&btnG=Search+Froogle), which should work..

If those devices use a USB cable to interface with the computer then of course they'll work with a USB 2.0 card. In fact some of them may actually work faster (I'm thinking of the scanner and printer).

I just received an ipod for an early Christmas present. When I plug it into the usb port and click into itunes, it says my ipod isn't connect. Is it because my usb ports are messed up or is it because of the ipod? I tried it on two computer already and I got the same message. I even went out to buy a usb card.

When I got my iPod, windows would see the iPod through USB 1.1 but iTunes wouldn't see it until I installed a USB 2.0 card into my PC.

Yes

Control panel>hardware>device manager>usb controllers from the start menu then see if it says anything about 2.0 or havign an "enhanced" controller. you can also install a program called sandra lite 2005 which you will find witha quick google search aht will tell yuo the version and speeds, specs, etc. of your usb ports underthe motherboard section of th program.

USB 1.1 isn't that bad. Sure the initial upload takes hours upon hours - but maintence syncs later on aren't that much slower than a USB2 connection.

hey,

I just received a 4g 40gig IPod to replace my whacked out 3g 15 giger that died a premature death. So I get my new Ipod home and plug her in, just to see that itunes (the newest version) doesn't recognize that its there. So my Ipod goes through the motions and in about two minutes says its safe to disconnect.

I guess my question is this, like dgstinner it doesn't look like my Ipod wants to be seen by itunes till I buy a usb 2.0, and being as i've already dropped a bunch of cash to invest in this new ipod I was hoping to avoid any more costs, so what is the deal? how can I get my new Ipod to be recognized by itunes and to update with all the songs I have just waiting for it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

well everyone who I have talked to who uses 1.1 says it takes veryyyy long to recognize, and Apple reccomends not using 2.0 because it will make your HD spin adn work alot harder and faster than it should.
