I feel that i should just mention that alot of artists will allow free downloads of a select few of their tracks via their own official website. bands' fansites are also a great source for live recordings as well.

examples:

http://www.millencolin.com/media/music.htm
http://www.darktranquillity.com/media/audio.html
http://www.passenger.nu/releases/index.html
http://www.g-brothers.com/listen.htm

whenever you find out about a new band, you should always check their website first! you dont always have to resort to illegal downloading!

I hear ya man! I found this page shortly after buying Take a Picture at the iTMS. Boy did I feel like kicking myself in the butt.
