anyone have suggestions where I can get free legal music similar to mp3.com or Amazon.com free music download...
I want to search for new things to listen to....

The music industry is so busy fighting the internet that it isn't really
putting the marketing potential to good use. But there are a few
other options.
I assume you know about the iTunes Music Store and the 30 second previews. I find this pretty useful. If you are a W*ndows user, it is
supposed to be available by year end (might want to check out buymusic.com till then. but don't buy from them. Won't play on your
iPod).
Another thing you may want to check out is eTree.com and furthurnet.com.
These are good for tracking down live recordings from bands who permit taping. Although they tend to lean heavy towards your "jam" bands (the dead, phish, dmb), there is a lot of stuff out there.
Also, check out websites of various artists. Some have downloads.
