This was on the old board as well, so let's start it here - where are you starting to see iPods popping up and what do you do when you see a fellow podder?
Me?
I've seen them around campus and in the gym. There are three people I see wearing the white buds regularly.
Though at a recent conference I noticed a few delegates with them, using them to truck around presentations and such.

I'm a college student in Kansas and I never see any around here, but when I was in Chicago over spring break I saw at least 5 on the downtown buses. I didn't do anything. I just figured that they were enjoying their tunes and didn't want to bother them.

A kid at my high school (freshman) has an old-school 20GB. A member of my Church Orchestra has an old-school 10GB. I walk around the U of A (University of Arizona here in Tucson) and there are a huge number of iPod users. About one of every three hip college people listening to music is listening to an iPod.
I've never come across a fellow iPodder in real life. :(

I started dating a girl *gasp* because I noticed her pod.
It was a warm summer day, the sun was high in the sky and the air smelled sweet. She rolled past me, slowly, with two white earbuds and an ipod covered in an aqua blue Jam Jacket. Her eyes met mine as she began to stare at the large headphones resting on my head. She followed the cord below my waist to see none other then a bulge in my pants. Quizzicaly, she asked, "What kind of iPod?"
How did she know what was in my pants? It could have been a Diamond Rio, or a Nomad Zen. No - she knew the exact shape of the lump in my pants, she knew the size of my iPod.
Cheesy enough? ;-)
That's a great story, Lazurus. Cheesy? Definately. But nonetheless, a great story.

Here in NY I see folks with pods daily. Usually the white earbuds are a dead giveaway, and if I have mine in as well, the fellow 'podder and I usually lock eyes for a moment (which, in NY, is a lot!)
The most interesting thing is seeing how NYers carry their pods. Most (like me) have them in well-concealed locations, like a hidden pocket or lockboxed purse. Clearly, this gives us all the false sense of safety from getting our 'pods snatched out of our hands!
I've seen several bladers, joggers and bicyclists with iPods. They're most prevalent on the beach boardwalks around Los Angeles.

I know a couple of people who have iPods (one because I gave it to her) but I never see them with theirs. I haven't run into a stranger who had an iPod, but I can describe how people who don't have them behave. It's usually to tap me on the shoulder and ask what is that? It's fun to explain what the iPod is and how much music/files it can hold. Since I usually have a second set of headphones and the adapter with me I'll give them a listen. It can be a good way to meet someone new... as long as they like what I'm listening to.:D

My uncle is one of those guys who always get the newest things. Then I get to play with them. He had an iPod a month after they first came out (woah. talk about scratched. You can barely see some of the laser-engraved stuff on the back).
A kid who works on the ambulance with me (In CT, you can be 16 to be an EMT) has a 10 GB that he got in april. He paraded it around there like he was such a hot-shot (he tried to argue against me for about 10 minutesthat Linksys wireless routers didn't allow mac's to connect. Then I said "screw it" and pulled out my iBook, and showed him what was inside our server room). Wait until I show him my 15 GB w/ Dock...
Also, I saw a kid who also suddenly had white earphones. He just got a new 15 GB one, and he was "oh that sucks" when I told him my defective iPod story. Apparently, several other kids in our school got iPods, but I haven't seen them. I tell you, these things are an excellent upgrade from my Archos 6 GB brick/mp3 player

Since you're a college student in Topeka, KS, I'll assume you go to Washburn University. If my assumption is correct, then you can rest assured that there is at least one fellow iPodder on your campus. I work at WU in ITS and have mine with me every day. :D

I attend UCLA as an undergrad and so far I've seen four other iPod's on campus. Ranging from people in my classes, people on the bus, people walking around campus, and people working front desks. Throw me in the mix and that's five so far, out of a good 45k+ students. I'm sure there are plenty more.

I see them frequently on the Metra trains and the CTA trains. I never ride the busses, but when I travel the lines so I don't have to bother with traffic, thats where I requently spot them.
It's funny, cause whenever I do see them with it on... they usually give you a nod while shaking the unit when I pull mine out. (Don't have a guttermind... :p)

I was traveling up the grapevine (north of LA) two nights ago and a Jeep drove by me--I probably wouldn't have paid attention except I noticed a glowing screen from the passanger side and four red lights underneath it. First ipod I've seen out and about. I tried to catch up to the person to turn my ipod on and let them know I'm another fellow ipodder, but they were flying along the freeway and I couldn't catch up (within reasonable speed ;) ).

I guess you just see them more once you start looking for them, but I normally see two or three different people with them every day when I'm on the Underground here in London. I'm going by how many people have the white earbuds, it's pretty rare to see the pod itself, although I have seen a couple of the 3rd gen ones.

I know at least 5 people who own one. I've seen them around. Most recently I saw a student who goes to the tech school downstairs from my office holding one.
Last winter, I was snowboarding at Mammoth and the guy next to me on the ski lift had an iPod with him, too. He had battery issues, though. Go fig. I took a picture of mine and put it up on the Pods around the world section. The one with the red snowboard with the Z-Trip sticker on it. Oh, wait, we can't view it right now. :(

Simon Baker of The Guardian TV Show has one (as reported by one of his fans who visited the show's set and talked about it on a fansite).

"Sir, is that an ipod?" he replied, "a what?" "the white thing on your belt, is that an ipod sir?"
"son, one, i'm a diabetic and this is an insulen pump, and two, you need to mind your own business. Now, if we don't have any more questions lets get back to Freud." The next day I showed him my ipod and he clearly saw how i could make the mistake, I may have even convinced him to purchase one for himself.

I haven't seen anyone else with an iPod so far, but I get a lot of attention over mine, especially at work. I just bought my 3G 15GB unit 2 weeks ago. One person quite a bit younger than I said she "felt old" after seeing my iPod because she was totally out of touch with current technology and "had no idea they could make something like that".

Meanwhile, I show *my* Ipod to anyone who will look. And the other day my dentist saw me sitting with it in the waiting room and said, "Is that an iPod? I was looking at those the other day." I keep waiting for some cool guy to spot mine and say, "cool, an iPod" but that has yet to happen.

ginalee, yes, I can believe it. I feel kind of silly with how excited I've gotten over this little device. I would think that anyone who loves music and can afford one would have one. But then we wouldn't feel like part of some elite, huh?

spksmom, it was my birthday that day. :D Oh yeah, I saw quite a few when I went to the Apple Store today. About 3 employees all had iPods. I dunno if it was for kind of some pseudo-advertisement for them, or they actually owned it, but they had them clipped to their belts.
spksmom, you feel silly? I was running around jumping on the 3rd street promenade right after I got my iPod. My friends must've thought I was crazy for that reaction to 'just an mp3 player'...lol. The ride home was one of the longest waits in my life. Seriously.

I've had my 15 gb 3rd gen ipod for about a little over a month now. I have a beagle named aki, and like all beagles she needs to be walked once a ngiht. SO i usually go out around 10 pm and start jogging with my ipod. One night, when i was joggig with aki, i see an extremely hot, nicely shaped female figure also with a beagle jogging towards my direction. As we jogged nearer, our dogs gained sight of each other and they stopped to ..ahem... "sniff" each other lol. While we were entagled with our leashes, she looked into my eyes, then at my ears which had little white earbuds embedded in them. She then reached into her pocket and pulled out a 3rg gen ipod as well! She pressed pause and the four red buttons and the whitish/blue lcd came on. Man deos it look cool at night. She asked what my dog's name was, then she told me her name was jessica. And tonight i am meeting her at a Japanese Restaraunt for our 5th date!

exactly, I think that is the only downside to the ipod. Somehow apple has managed to use some voodoo magic which attracts hot women to it. I admit that at first i loved this, but now i feel like i need more protection than the mace a carry around in my pocket to drive off these possessed beauties.
Oh here is another one of my ipod stories:
I was on at Goldengate Park in San Francisco and there was a local comedian performing on stage. I was standing next to a really hot girl on one side, and on the other side of her was some ignorant middle-aged fool. To impress the hot girl next to me, he pulled out his dinky rio mp3 player and started "teaching" her about today's latest technology ad about the future of portable music. I couldnt help but stare with a sense of pity for this fool and he looked at me and said "hey buddy what are u listening to? a portable tape player?" (at the time i had on cheap street style headphones cause i was running in the park earlier that day) and to answer his question, i pulled out my sleek 15 Gb ipod out of the perfect black case. I then turned on the white/blue backlight and said, "no, i'm listening to my 15 GB ipod." Normally, even the most a dim-witted fool knows when he's been told up, but this fool was an exception. He said sometign that really ####ed me off. he looked at the ipod, shrugged, and said "wouldn't buy anyof that apple crap if you paid me." I then shrugged and said, " wouldn't want you white trash owning one anyway, taints the image" The hot girl, who i later found out was named wendy, pulled out an old school 20 gb and said "i couldnt agree with you more" smiled at me, and we walked away together.

then you're not lookng in the right places! ipods are everywhere, yet they are enough of a rarity that i still find people staring in awe lol. You wont see them if you go to a bar or areas like that. I find that i spot the most "podders" in trains, BART, and i saw a lot in the Sony's San Francisco Metrion. I see a lot of people jogging out in parks with the white earbuds on and i've even seen a few on planes.

yeah i can imagine, i can't live without my music much less my ipod lol. I am an ipoholic. It took me awhile to admit that to myself though. At first i would deny my addiction saying "i can live without the ipod". But as my addiction got worse, i saw the people who loved me start to worry. I am now recovering, slowly but surely. I dont turn on the backlight at night and stare at my ipod for hours anymore, but i still put the ipod in the lock position and spin my thumb around the touchpad. Sometimes, i'll see my mother crying when she sees me polish my ipod with my custom-made cleaning solution. My psychiatrist started to worry after i punched a guy for sneezing in the direction of my ipod. I know that I ipoholism is a disease, and that i am not alone. Though it is easy to lose hope, i can find sanity and security when i talk to my fellow ipodders in this forum ;)

A guy walks into a bar...and it hurt!
A man is scuba diving in austrailia. He has all the equipment to keep him safe underwater: the airtank, mask, wetsuit the whole 9 yards. Hes about 10 feet underwater and he sees another man without any equipment at all, just in plain clothes. The scuba diver goes down about 20 feet and a few second later he is joined by the same man. "this guy must be a proffesional if he can stay under this long," he thought to himself. The diver goes down even further and is about 40 feet underwater. About a minute later, the same man joins him at the same depth. "amazing!" the diver thiks to himself. He then pulls out a water-proof chalkboard and writes "how the hell do u stay down here so long?!?" the man grabs the piece of chalk, erases teh board and writes "i'm drowning you moron".

I often see people on the tube with the white earphones. Obviously I don't give them the time of day as the Apple 'phones are total parp. Why compromise such a great machine? Furthermore, why make yourself an obvious target for the ubiquitous smackheads prevalent in central London?

I have seen a few guys using iPods in my city in Germany. For example I saw one guy walking with his iPod downtown when I didn't have my Pod with me.
Another time I saw a guy from a neighboring school who owned an iPod, I saw his white headphones *g*.
I knew lots of people who use iPods, for example a teacher of mine, who uses a 30gig iPod, a friend of mine who uses a 2nd Gen 10GB iPod and another friend of mine who recently got my good old 5gig iPod, and not to forget: Me :D

Maybe the reason why I don't see any is because I live in an area that is basically dead to Apple...everybody here is either all-PC or knows absolutely nothing about computers and either can't afford or is afraid to own one.

But there has to be SOMEBODY who's buying everything at Circuit City...

Where else... a girl in my English class had one (she kept it in a leather case, but I'm pretty sure it was 1 or 2G), a dude in my Biology class had one (1G, which he would leave sitting on his desk while he went down to the lounge for hours at a time, unbelieveable), and once I saw one while someone was plugging it in to the firewire port on the back of a Mac in a lab. The only one I've seen outside of school is mine, a 20GB 3G which I got last Monday. When I got off the bus the other day, I was holding it in my hand at eye level to someone who was sitting near the door, and as he looked at it you could just *feel* the envy, he knew exactly what it was. Fabulous. Petty, but fabulous. :P

I see a few people walking around with white earbuds on my campus (U of T downtown Toronto). You would never know if I have an iPod since I don't use the white earphone and keep the pod in my pocket. The earbuds are so recognizable that I would get robbed in my neighbourhood or on the TTC!

I see a few around downtown Madison, WI. Mostly students. Saw several of them on all types of people on a recent trip to NYC. In fact, my wife & I were chatting with a guy at the hotel who had one (an old school model), told him we were thinking about getting one, and his friend pulled her brand new Pod out of her purse and said "Stop thinking about it! Just get one!"

Thought I was the only one at my school. Was walking around campus when I got another one of the "WOW is that an iPod?!?!" questions.
"Yeah."
"Hey, I got one too! Here check it out!"
Turns out he was a 2Gen iPodder.
And, awhile back, I was getting my iPod for my birthday. I'm all excited and everything, because I'm like...first of my friends to get one. So one of my friends I invited to my party decides to show off something to me...his brand new 3G iPod he got a week ago. And I thought I was gonna be the first. Ack! lol
So yeah...that's 3 ppl in my school I counted. And one of my friends (A PC -> Mac convert...saw my iBook and was switched, lol) is setting his sights on one too.

this probably the main reason i keep my ipod hidden away, and dont use white ear buds.
In london if you own anything over ?100 and it can easily be stolen from your person its fair game to the guys out on the streets.
BUT the iPod in particular is very attractive, compared to mobile phones etc, its:
A. Worth More.
B. Can't be blacklisted like a mobile phone.
C. is VERY desireable amongst "ghetto" kids since its been featuerd in many music videos; i.e P.I.M.P by 50 cents.

The "City of London" is a black hole when it comes to the "common or garden" street hoodlem. Its full of businessman in suits and contractors in hard hats, so they'd stick out like a sore thumb. Plus the "City of London" is probably the most policed area in the metropol. They EVEN have they're own police force.
Street hoodlums are much more likely to find easier pickings amongst the rich school kids and the west end full of rich tourists and media type ### holes.

The only time I saw an iPod other than my own was when my boss came in with a 20 gb last summer. Another co-worker of mine has one, too. I've never seen anyone around school with one, though.

I'm in school in Philly, PA...my sub college of the university is a college of media arts and design so most of the fields are using macs in and out of the classroom. We get a deal with the UPenn computer store where if we buy a printer and an 10GB iPod with our mac laptop/desktop they give us a refund for 300 dollars which is the equivalent of a free iPod. Soooo most kids in my college have them...I felt like a minority not having one...I'll be buying myself a Powerbook this summer coming up and I'll already be equipped with an iPod! I see kids with the distinctive iPod "buds" on in my Design and Drawing classes while working on projects...I will be joining them now. :)

I have never seen anyone with an iPod. I have only seen it in real life at a store, and it was just a display model that was not powered (it was engraved on the back with "For Display Only"). :( However, I still fell in love with its style, and I have used it in animations, proving it's ease of use. :D

Of course these people have lots of money, but a guy (probably an NFL footballer) came into a show with a Hummer H2 and wanted a sound system put in that would accomodate his iPod! Here in Holland I have only seen one so far, in the train from Eindhoven to Utrecht. It was owned by a business man. I looked VERY jealous, kept standing up to get a good look.
In fact, I have only seen one other person with an iBook. I bring mine to school every day, so I get the looks too. The students here are more geared towards partying than gadgets it seems, and it seems to me that Holland (at least the south) is not a very Apple minded country.
Sara
i've seen 3 other then mine....1 2g one which i laughed at becuase mine was 3g and the guy with it was a total geek.....and 2 3g's which were both 10 gigs..also laughed at as mine is 20 :D
i saw em around school...for like a week i was the only one with an i pod (or so it would seem) and then they started springing up after christmas...it's pretty annoying...it's like somone driving up to school with the exact same car as you thats the exact same colour and parking right beside you and it turns out to be the biggest loser at school...and it's not a pontiac or anything like that which you'd expect to see other people with ..it's like a porsche 9-11 turbo ..that you thought you'd be the only person with one...
i've had this thing for over a month and some how people still come up to me and assk the how much , how much does it hold crap..and it's always the same people too ...it's getting to be extremely annoying...like sure driving a porsche would be wicked...but imagine all the people coming uup to you and asking stupid questions..and then throwing it right in your face by saying they think it's a total waste of money.....exactly...
Owning an iPod is like owning a Porsche
at least thats my take on it

I am tired of all the ipods I see around here (university of michigan) it almost makes me want to get an iriver or something just to be different, bu tI got such a good deal on my ipod, plus I love it to death.
On my bus (10 min) I see none. But I'm coming for a pretty low class neighborhood. But once I step off the bus, and go into work (3 min walk) I see at least 5 outside. Then inside the computer lab there's always at least a dozen or so around. Hell a guy just walked by with one one but at least he had black/silver headphones on.

I don't get some of these quotes. Who cares how many people have them. Yes the iPod is sleek looking and popular, but I bought it because it was the best player out there for me, not for sheer coolness.

This post cracks me up! Explain to me exactly what an iPod poser is? A poser, to me, is someone that mimics someone or something of a professional type status when they are really nothing special. An example is someone that goes out an buys all of the pro sports gear to match their favorite player and don't have the skill to back it up.
Don't know of any pro iPod people out there that I'd try to be like.
If you have the money, and the iPod is the right player for you, then it's the right thing.
Besides, do you really want less people owning the product?

That's it, I didn't buy it because it was cool, I bought it because it was/is awesome and I got a helluva deal on it. I think I live in the iPod capital of the world- New York. Everywhere I go I see an iPod- bus, train, walking around town. Sometimes I think somebody's listening to a walkman or something, because I don't see the white earphone, but they pull it out of their pocket and it's an iPod. lol, well i live in sydney australia, i go to a high school of about 900, pretty much every one knows everyone, i was like the first person in my school to get an ipod, n then this other guy in year 12 (im in year 10) who i talk to often got his 10 days after mine, n we often find ourselves discussing ipods, he got a 3g 20gig i got a 3g 15gig, then theres this other girl in my year, noticed mine, had a bit of a play with it, n then 3 days later came to school with her ipod mini n was like hey my ipods better than urs, well its like hey #### you with your cheap ### 4gig ipod, go #### off with ur 1000 songs ok? personally i dont raelly like ipod minis too much, 4gig isnt enough considering mine doubles as an external hdd which im sure is the same for most users...so at my school 3 out of 900. apart from that ive only seen 2 others in public with them.
I know of a few students at my highschool that have some iPods.
I was also once at a volleyball game and I noticed white earbuds with one spectator.

We have a heap of them at work. There's three 3rd Generations (a 40Gb and two 20Gb), a 1st Generation (don't know what size) and in the next week (*when* it arrives) mine as well! (A lowly 15Gb 3G).
Its because of the guys at work that I'm getting one... I guess I just fell in love with them (the iPod, not the guys ;) ) - although I'm sure Apple's recent UK advertising campaign has helped persuade me! :)

Three months ago I chatted with this girl during a lunch break at my college campus when she pulled-out her 3G 20GB, the first iPod I've seen outside the stores. This was before I bought my 15GB, so I was asking questions about it, mentioned about a rumor of a smaller iPod (which would eventually be the mini a few weeks later), and even I listened to it (some crappy Chinese pop song) on the stock 'phones. Told her if she could get even better 'phones than that, her reply was "I would, but then it wouldn't match. Besides, I don't have enough for new ones".
Since then, I've seen very few around campus (and around these parts north of downtown). This hot blonde girl walked past by unfurling her white 'phones with the iPod in its case, and an older guy studying at the library listening on a silver mini (a first) a week after they went on sale.
Of course, go to places in town like Alki Beach/West Seattle, Green Lake, and downtown I see an increasing number of 'Podders around.

Simple: product placement. you cant see it wrapped up in a case, can you?:D

In the Season Finale of the O.C. Seth (Adam Brody) has those little white earbuds in his ears from his iPod. (I can notice those things from anywhere!:p )

I saw a silver mini and a 3G wandering the halls at my school last week. The 3G had some frilly pink case and the mini was naked. And of course, the two owners were both using the white buds.
