We have 2 Ipods (actually 3, but the 3rd uses its own computer). A series of "rotten circumstances" occurred that I want to correct for the future. Here's what happened.
1) Many many songs on computer G: drive (which is an external drive).
2) G: drive breaks, so now ipod cannot play or see the songs on the g: drive.
3) Download Sharepod in order to upload songs FROM Ipod so they'll be on the C: drive.
4) Connect Ipod, but before anything else happens, it starts automatically updating, which means it wiped out about 500 songs (those that can't be seen on the G: drive) before my daughter ripped the cord out to stop it from automatically updating. Those 500 songs are now gone, because they were "updated" off the ipod, and the G: drive is fried.
5) Now, I understand to change any preferences in Itunes, you have to have your ipod connected. But this is a Catch-22, because if we connect the ipod, it will wipe out the rest of the music on the ipod, and we can't get it back because the g: drive is fried (we're working on recovery from the g: drive, but in the meantime).
6) So I guess never using auto update is the preference, but how do I get it to do that now, without wiping out the rest of what's on there already?
I very much appreciate any help you can give me.
