Hi, I'm new to the forum, but there's some great info here, thanks...

My 20gb iPod was just stolen and I'm looking to replace it asap. I am concidering the 40gb iPod photo, but I'd like to know what people think of it. Is this photo technology relevant and will it stay that way for a while to come?

Also is there any possibility that Apple might upgrade the firmware to allow for video playback? It seems that the iPod photo has everything it would need to do so (audio and visual playback that is). Would it be possible for someone to write that software themselves?

My first question for you is, how many "apdaptable extras" have you purchsed for your 20gb? The 40g photo isn't going to fit in your 20 dock, or a pair of inMotion speakers, or the JBL on stage either I believe.

Don't hold out much hope that a firmware update will take a 40 Photo into a video player. I'm pretty sure the hardware/software would both require upgrades to deliver video.

I can't even get the simplest of requests through to Apple - I want a menu option for "Go to Artist" or "Go to Album" while I'm listening to a song, in case I want to jump off my playlist and listen to a particular album or artist. As it stands one must go through 48 "Menu presses" and 30 yards of scrolling through hundreds of artists or hundreds of albums!

Even if you do not fully utilize the photo capabilities, you will love the color screen! Go to an Apple Store or wherever and check it out.

Actually, the iPod Photo is only very slightly thicker than the iPod 40Gb unit. It works just fine with my inMotion speakers, although I can't speak for other dockable accessories, I wouldn't expect it to be a problem unless the accessory is a really tight fit, or designed only for the 20Gb.

Pretty much all other 4G accessories will work fine with the Photo in my experience (I have the wired remote, Navipod, iTrip, and iTalk and they all work just fine).

For the dock, they say not to use a normal dock with the iPod Photo, perhaps due to different outputs, but I'm not sure whether that would really be a problem. However, since it comes with it's own dock anyway, I wouldn't be too worried.

Heck, I still want a shuffle feature that doesn't suck, and that's not even getting dealt with.
