Remote & Older iPods?

I have the original 5GB iPod, and just got the "iPod Remote + Earphones" as a gift. On the box it says "Compatible with iPod with dock connector," but I thought I had seen the remote used with older iPods as well. Does anyone know if the remote will work on an iPod without the dock connector, or whether I should just return it? I haven't opened the box yet.

the remote will definately NOT work on a 1G, as it uses a port only found on 3G, 4G and Minis. The older iPod you saw with a remote was a 2G, which used a port different from that of the 3/4/Minis.

Your best bet for the older remote (no longer made) is Ebay my friend :)
