If anyone's interested, here are some pics of the FlipStand in the flesh. (The images on Speck's website are still computer-generated.)

Looks good...
Thanks for the Pics!

is the flipstand removable? If it can be removed, can it be replaced without breaking it?

Looks pretty good, but you should take more pictures with a piece of black paper behind everything and proper lighting with no flash.

Hmm... What's with the white dock? Is that included? Maybe I misread Speck's website, because I didn't see mention of it.

Thanks by the way... it's nice to have actual photos now.

The first one makes the iPod look invisible-- it's just a clear case and a screen... lol

Thanks, kyrian...a little off-topic, but what was it sent by? On my status page, it says Shipped, but there's no tracking number. What service did they send it through? Thanks.

I got mine yesterday.

1. Shipped UPS
2. Dock is included.
3. You can remove the flipstand part. (I hadn't tried, but after the question was asked, I did it without any problems.)

Nice...real nice. I just wish they would make a clear case for the "classic" ipods as well.

thanks for checking that for me. I'm about to buy one now.

does their dock have a line out?
Looking at the photos, I'm thinking no......

Does the iPod shake around in there at all, or is it nice and snug?

Unixmonkey

the dock has a passthru that you plug your apple provided cable into just like the apple dock.

A great addon.

Edit: Oh, LINE out. I don't know, can you enlighten us?

Macavity

No line out...the Apple cable just plugs directly into the iPod....their dock just makes it sit better. (From what I remember looking at it last night.....don't have it with me right now. I'll check when I get home.)

I have a 30GB, and it doesn't slide around at all.

No rattling at all inside the case...I had my Pod wrapped in PDA protectors as an interim solution until the FlipStand arrived. Once I got it, I tried to slip the Pod into the case, but realized it wouldn't fit until I removed the PDA wrapping. The fit is that tight. No rattling whatsoever.

The only negatives I can muster about the case are about the actual FlipStand part. It works very well at presenting the perfect viewing angle while seated on a table, but the FlipStand component seems a little fragile. Hopefully it'll prove to be durable. Also, I wish they had used the same completely clear plastic for the Stand, instead of the opaque plastic. It would have been more consistent in design. However, these are not elements that bother me much. I love the functionality, protection and look of the case. Very well designed.

Mine was shipped out from NoCal a week ago today, and I recieved it via UPS Ground on Tuesday. However, Speck never e-mailed me with a tracking number, so I didn't know exactly when to expect it.

Hope the pics were helpful. I didn't have much time to scrutinize background or lighting, since I'm a friggin' law student in my first month of classes, but I hope they helped. Speck really needs to update their website.

Thanks for the pics and info!

How about for the smaller ipods, i heard that the flipstand ships with an insert? Is it just a black insert? maybe made of neoprene or something?

Kyrian
08-07-2003, 08:56 PM
The insert is a small (maybe 1 1/2"x2") light grey neoprene pad with an adhesive side to stick to the inside back of the case. I imagine it works alright for the 10/15 giggers. Like I said, for the 30, it fits like a glove.

Hey... Awesome case.

BTW... Thought I'd contribute. 28% off sound good?

that looks outstanding

Kyrian

That's a sweet deal, indeed. When all was said and done with my order from Speck, it was almost $40. Still worth it, but 30% off is a great deal.

Good find...thats a heck of a deal...and I'd imagine that it ships with the docking cradle as well. At least we hope :)

Is the case thick in a way that makes it hard to press the buttons? (play, menu, etc.)

Kyrian
08-08-2003, 04:34 AM
It's not a problem for me to touch the buttons with my index finger, but if you're a thumb-user, you're probably out of luck. No one-hand operation with this baby...

Just got mine...it certainly looks sharp, though I kind of botched the adhesive pad thing. Still, the fit is very snug for my 15 GB iPod. I like it a lot.

So then is it hard to toggle the hold switch? Would you say that the plastic is brittle (and prone to cracks, etc) or is it pretty durable?

Macavity
08-08-2003, 03:53 PM
It's easy to toggle the Hold switch.....you just have to open the top first....

Kyrian
08-08-2003, 05:07 PM
I can't really attest to the durability of the plastic yet, since the case is brand new, but it seems very solid. The shiny finish of the casing is very prone to fingerprints (though not unlike the Pod itself). I imagine the plastic is gonna get fairly scratched up over time, but what are you gonna do, plaster the case with PDA screen covers?...That's a bit excessive...

RenaissanceGirl

I wouldn't care if it got scratched... I would just be a little peeved if it shattered or cracked easily (especially in the hinges)... like this clear cellphone case I once purchased...

The Bottom hinge for the flipstand itself looks quite large. Does it snag in the pocket or is burdensom in some way?

Question for those who own the flipstand...

It's been brought up before that the opening at the top of the case for the headphones is fairly small...

Does that opening accomodate the connection of the Shure E2c's? It looks like it does...but I was just tryin to get some sort of confirmation.

Thanks!

Kyrian
09-09-2003, 11:28 PM
Actually, I'm sorry to report that the opening is too small to use directly with the Shure E2's, or probably most right-angle headphone plugs for that matter. I have a pair of the Shures, but I always have to use the remote with them, which fits perfectly through the opening. Kind of a drag, but it's well worth having the protection of the case and being able to use better-sounding non-Apple phones.

IronSerif
09-09-2003, 11:35 PM
ok cool, thanks for the info.

I guess worst case scenario -> plug in the remote and use it like that....

Or for those who are feeling adventurous, maybe mod the opening a bit, but not sure how good that would turn out.

Also got another question...
check out this thread here:

http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7433

Bob mentioned something about cutting the plastic that came with the iPod and using it to cover the scroll wheel and buttons. But this idea was geared towards use with the exo's.

I'm just wondering if this idea would work with the flipstand?

Kyrian
09-10-2003, 04:37 PM
It might depend on what size iPod you're using with the case. As I said in my first post on this thread, I originally had my 30 gigger covered in PDA protectors, and the fit of the FlipStand was so tight that I had to remove them in order to slide it in. I don't recall how thick in comparison to PDA covers the original iPod clear wrap was, but if it was thin enough, you could conceivably use it with the FlipStand. Also, if you're using a slimmer 10/15/20 gig model, it's likely no problem at all.

yeah I remembered that you said you had a 30GB iPod with the Flipstand, and that it was a nice tight fit.

I have the slimmer 15GB iPods, so I'm thinking that maybe if I don't use the included padding for the Flipstand, I might be able to cut up a zip case, seran wrap, or use some other plastic to cover the buttons and scroll wheel.

Moldy said he has a Flipstand and a 10/15GB iPod, I wonder if he's tried this trick out yet?

heck of a deal...but check this out from their web page:

"Welcome to the "MICRO ENTERPRISES" Website!!! This is a wholesale site only. You must have a valid resale permit to order from us!!"

Got this message when I was at the shipping page:

"Micro Enterprises is not open for business."

jerrodh
09-12-2003, 06:29 PM
Sorry about that, IronSerif. ;) Shoulda looked around a bit before posting.

I posted that quite a while ago... was anyone able to take advantage of the offer, or was this "not open for business" message there all along??? (I suppose the implicit question here is "If they were open back then, did they make you prove you were a retailer?")

IronSerif
09-12-2003, 06:35 PM
No apologizies needed man it was a good find for a good deal.

They only show the wholesale msg on the main home page, and the only reason I went to their main page was to see if they had any new products.

I was gonna try to find out more info about ordering products from them until I saw the msg about how they are not open for business...that just turned me away lol :P

A little late here... but can someone that owns the flipstand let me know the vertical dimension of the the flipstand+ipod+dock (ie all together)? I'm trying to find solution for my car mount, and this might be it. I just have limited vertical clearances.

Someone please measure for me? Nearest 1/8" (or mm)...

Hey sorry I'm a lil late in responding.

I can try to get you the measurements later tonight after work or tomorrow if I remember. I'll make myself a note :)
