View Full Version : In Car Dilemma
Right now my in car setup consists of the Belkin Car Kit and a Casette Tape thing. The whirring motor and clicking tape have finally gotten to me, and I've decided I need to do some sort of upgrade. Until I started perusing around this forum, I was pretty well dead set on an iTrip. Now the topic of FM modulators has struck me. I don't know crap about car stereos, or anything of the sort. I'm driving a 2001 Nissan Maxima with a bose stereo. Also, I happen to work at Best Buy, having access to cheap car audio parts and installation work. How much better will my performance from an FM modulator be? I'm thinking if I did that, I should plug the FM modulator into the line out on my car kit so I don't have to futz with volume levels, as well as only having to connect one wire. Is this something I should consider? If so, what should I tell the car audio people that I need?

If you have a stereo that has an auxilliary input, or capable of adding one - that's the best bet - you probably can't get the adaptor through best buy, most local stores don't carry the specific parts. The only part I know about for a direct aux in is the soundgate at $100 for your car.
in order of sound quality:
Best - direct auxilliary input
Good - cassette adaptor
Ok - wired FM modulator (Ok+ if you get one like the Clarion that locks out the antenna when in use)
Fair - FM transmitter

It's a better solution than an FM transmitter, but not by much, a line level input is still the best way to go. Soundgate (http://www.soundgate.com/products/cd/nissan-infiniti.htm) looks like they make an aux input for your stereo, you'll just need another cable and then you can connect your iPod to your stereo. There is an IceLink (http://densionusa.com/merchant/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DU&Product_Code=I11_Nissan_R1&Category_Code=IA_Nissan) available but it is currently backordered.

You can get an AIWA deck with a front Aux-in jack for around $100.
Hmm. The direct AUX method sounds cool. I'll see if maybe the Best Buy folk can order it. That would be pro. At the very least, I'll get a cheap install.
The part is not available. Which of the soundgate guys would I want? Should I just splurge and get the ICELink Plus?

Do a search in this forum, I know someone ordered and received the ALNS1 (that's the one you want) from somewhere.
