View Full Version : Sell my 4g 40gb and 3g 10gb for an iPod Photo?

I have a 3G 10gb, and my 4G 40gb gift is already assured in the near future.

Now, the iPod Photo comes out, and I initially want to sell my gear to get the latest, since, when I upgrade, I like to go all the way.. The only improvement I can see is a better battery life and a cool color screen that serves little purpose, though.

The small screen is hardly better than viewing pics on your digital camera, and you have to spend $100 for a card reader to be able to swap the pictures to your ipod without using a computer, and if you have a computer, why the heck would you need pics on your ipod.

The Archos av420, admittedly only 20gb, is in the same price range, and blows this thing away. Sure, it's a lot bigger, but that's the point: 3.8" screen! Wow, now you can actually look at your pictures. AND, it comes with a built-in compact flash card slot, so you can transfer the pictures to the av420 and pop it back in the camera for another couple hundred pics. No computer or $100 card reader necessary!

On top of that, you can watch MOVIES. not just look at pictures. Hook it up to your cable box, tell it what to record, and it'll change the channel at the right time and record it, just like TIVO.

It plays DivX, too! Rip your dvds and watch them on a road trip in essentially dvd quality (704x480 @ 30 f/s).

There are several other competitors that just seem to blow this thing away. Granted, the iPod Photo is smaller.. but that small size inherently limits it's ability to really display photos.

My iPod is always in my pocket, but am I the only one that thinks that having it in my pocket instead of my backpack, when I want to listen to mp3s, is really that important, considering all of the advantages the competition has?

Doesn't it make sense that the iPod Photo should come with something that allows it to receive photos?? If they had included the card reader, I would get it. It's no useful than what I already have for photography!!

I love iPods, but Apple really screwed up with this. It's already obsolete, and doesn't come with anything new to accompany the new photo feature..

Well, I suppose it depends upon how you really view the device... Apple pioneered the concept of carrying your entire music library in your wallet, now they're allowing you to do so with you entire photo collection. In all honesty, the device is probably not what most people had hoped for in terms of the photo capabilities, but if you look at it for what it does, it's really quite good.

I probably wouldn't have upgraded from a 4G if I had already had one, but being my first iPod, I decided to go for the top of the line and I'm actually quite happy I did. The colour screen alone makes a big difference, in my opinion.

I see the iPod Photo as a digital wallet moreso than anything else. Sure there are other devices that do a lot more, but the iPod Photo is very simplistic in it's approach, and for a consumer-targeted device (which as I've said elsewhere, is what any Apple product is), it's very usable and efficient.

The one thing that I should point out, however, is that if you do buy the Belkin card reader or digital camera link, you still can't load photos into the iPod Photo that will be viewable on the device... It simply transfers them to the hard drive.

I was somewhat disappointed by that, but I don't see it as a big issue (and I still would have bought the iPod Photo even if I had known that beforehand).

Bottom line is that if you're looking for a full digital media device that will really do photos and video and everything, then definitely don't go with the iPod Photo. However, if you're looking for a very cool and easy to use music player than you can also use as a digital photo wallet, then the iPod Photo is just the solution.

wow, you can't even look at photos on the iPod photo? so the color screen serves what purpose?

it functions exactly the same as the rest of them, then. you could store photos on an i pod just as easily as any other device with the same hard drive capacity...

now i'm even less excited about their release.

screw it, i'm not getting one. they added an almost completely negligble function to it..

No, you can look at photos... They just have to be loaded in through iTunes so that they're resized, thumbnailed and indexed.

If you think about it, it's the same as adding music to your iPod... You can't just drop a bunch of MP3/AAC files on it and expect them to come up through the player interface.

Sigh, another lamer post saying "The iPod killer is here! Sinners repent!" Seriously, we've been over this before. Use the search feature. There is no need to get another debate over which mp3 player you want.

A 2 inch screen is decent for viewing photos when compared to a digicam. The majority of digicams have a 1.5 inch display which is .5 of an inch smaller than that on the ipod photo. It's good if u wanna show off your photos without carrying your camera or if u wanna doa slideslow or put it on a tv. The 15 hour battery is great. Fewer recharges.
