Just about to get an iBook and I'm wondering how I'll be able to use my iPod with it.

Until now I've used my iPod with my PC with my music stored on my PC and my iPod.

I don't really want to have my music stored on my iBook as well as this will waste valuable hard drive space. Can I connect my iPod to the iBook and run iTunes with the iPod as memory?

Also are there any other issues of using my iPod with both PC and iBook?

Finally - not iPod related - what programmes do I get on my iBook apart from iLife, Mail & the internet one? Are there any basic word processing programmes etc?

Thanks in advance.

Well all you have to do is keep it connected and it will work as an external HD.

You will need to put the iPod into manual sync, and then play it off the iPod.

Some awesome Mac programs:
Adium, Openoffice.org, Firefox

But you should go to iOnmac.com or macteens.com and ask them.

The iBook will come with Appleworks that very similar to Microsoft Office.

It can read office documents and even save into microsoft office formats.

Appleworks 6 has something called Presentation. Never used it myself.

Looking at it, it looks like it won't save as ppt, or open ppt.

My microsoft office for Mac came with a cheap liscense of $30 bucks through my school while I was at the university (sheesh, I'm on my THIRD university...). Used Appleworks all the time until I got the cheap version of office. Appleworks does a good job handling word docs from microsoft, but I'd run into issues every now and then, getting microsoft office erased almost all compatibility issues.

Never used open office. Sounds interesting.

recently, I replaced old powerbook G3(pismo) with new ibook G4 14"(super drive). it's awesome. so far, I have no problem at all. it's perfectly matched with ipod. it will make you happy mac life ever. I use grageband, logic 7(wow, they're all fun to make my own music!), some Adobe photoshop, Illustrator. microsoft office, Apple works, and bundle software. one of fun things you enjoy is that you can play with iLife '04. have a fun!

Yes, it's free, and it still sucks. Last version I loaded (2 or 3 months ago) looked like it came right off a PC screen and was just plain clunky. I'm not defending M$, so don't get me wrong, but as long as I can "obtain" my copies of Office for the Mac, I'll keep using it.

Are we sure on this? Reading through a few other posts here, people seem to have trouble doing this.

I'll explain exactly what I want to do.

I currently use my iPod with iTunes on my Windows XP PC and have the tunes stored on both. I download tunes on the PC and then synch with iPod.

I am soon to get an iBook which will also have iTunes. I don't want to transfer tunes to my iBook as this will use up memory.

What will happen if I plug my iPod (which until now has only spoke to my Windows PC) into my iBook? Will I be able to run iTunes on my iBook with the source of tunes being my iPod as an external drive?

YES! Just turn off Auto Synch on both the PC and the Mac and you should be fine. The iPod will show up in the iTunes list on the left hand side of the iTunes Window. You'll be able to view and brows the songs on the iPod and play them via iTunes.

Use the iPod as a Hard Drive. The iBook will be able to read the Windows formatted iPod just fine. You can simply move the files between the two computers in this manner. You may have to remove your music library from the iPod to free up enough space to transfer the files betwen the two, but that is only temporary. If you plan on using the iPod on both machines make sure that Auto-Sych is turned off in iTunes for both machines.
