well 140$ can get you some nice phones so i'm going to suggest the:
Sony ex-71, Shure e2c, e3c and the etymotic Er-6i

The Sony MDR-EX51LP/EX71SL/EX81SL all have good boomy bass, which may not be the clearest, but are quite good for their price.. From what I've read the Shure E2c's have pretty good bass. Etymotics are not known to have much bass, they are mainly used for very accurate Highs and Mids, but not so much for the lows, and the Er-6i's are no exception.. Realistically though if you LOVE bass I'd go for some good old fashioned Over-the-Ear Cans from Sennheiser or Grado, but I assume you are attracted to the portability of in-ear earphones...

Yeah, I don't think the Shure E2c or E3c will give you enough bass, and the Ety 6i definitely will not. The Sony EX71 is probably your best bet unless you're willing to go up to a Shure E5c.

For heavy bass, I have the (headphones) Grados SR60's I got from (www.headphone.com/layout.php) for $69 - great bass.
But for everyday outdoors use and ear-canal phones - the Sony's mentioned above are good and come in white if you get them from (http://www.audiocubes.com). I paid $46.

well,
I am using the following headphones with my iRiver flash player. I love the tangle free cord and the sound quality, But I'd like to get some earbuds (lightweight/ smaller) for my iPod that has equal or better bass. I am going towards the EX71 or the EX81...
Which one would be more comfortable? I'd like to go to sleep while listening to music and sometimes the hearphones are alittle uncomfortable. Would you go for the ex71 or the ex81?
The headphones i use now:

-30 mm Diameter Drive Units are larger than many portable headphones for deeper bass, lower distortion and wider dynamic range; frequency response extends down to a low 12 Hz
-Large Turbo Duct for spectacular, extended bass response and crystalline treble - all in a lightweight, portable design

I have read that the EX81s are more even than the EX71s, so that means less bass. I would go with the black EX71s which can be found for about $30 at Amazon and Buy.com, if I were you.
But if you were willing to spend a bit more, consider the Shure E2Cs which can be found for $70. Very bassey, and greatly improved isolation, and more effecient so volume is never a problem.

I just got my Etymotic ER-6i's about two hours ago, and so far I'm pretty impressed. They beat my Sony earbuds on all counts, although the instructions indicate that it takes most people 7-10 days to get a good seal (good seal=good bass) ...

With some of the less sensitive buds and headphones, I would consider a portable headphone amp in addition to the recommendations presented here.

Kaufee said that Shure E2c won't give enough base

I've heard the opposite, but I trust Kauffee.

The E2c's aren't 'very' bassy, but they do have a good balanced representation of bass. I'd recommend them if you want something portable and very isolating.

The original poster said he wanted big bass, and I the E2 just doesn't do that. I agree with dodgyguy... it's a balanced representation of bass.

I really wouldn't say Grados had powerful bass. I have tried the SR-60's and the SR-80's and they really have nothing compared to some other phones - specifically Sennheisers (hence why I got mine).

I use Sony MDR-V300's when I go on the plane or something like that. They have good bass. Otherwise i'd recommend the Sony EX-71s

I definitely second that, with the Senn 555 or 595s. However, it's more personal preference than anything else. FYI, the 595s and 555s sound great amp'd, using an iPod's line out as source.

The Skull candy TiTANS are pretty great, i recently bought some for 50 bucks, amazing bass and pretty good sound quality for the price, plus they come with these "Comply foam tips" they're like memory foam that fit snug in your ears and they're made of aluminum.: D

The ER6's are excellent but you're not going to be happy with them as they don't exaggerate bass.
Cheers!

v-moda bassfreq are very good bass.
The cable insulation / jacketing isn't that greatest quality. The price is only so so if you pay MSRP. If you get them on sale then they are worth the money. The plug is not 1st gen Iphone compatible.
