Today I had to send back my new 40GB ipod photo. :( It was consistently locking up every day and I had to reset it each time. I was waiting to see if it continued and then yesterday it wouldn't respond to anything, plugging it into the dock, charging it, or reseting it. The hard drive was making strange clicking noises and it was getting quite hot. I called apple and they sent me a box to send the ipod back to get a new hard drive or be totally replaced. What I was wondering is, has something similar happened to anyone else? It is frustrating me a little bit. It makes me wonder if maybe I should've just returned it and gotten a regular ipod. :(

First shipments are usually buggy enough, do not worry. I hope your replacement will work like a charm.

Oh yeah that happened with my 40GB 4G iPod that i bought a month ago.

It started blocking every now and then. And then it'd get REALLY hot, the back was almost like exploding, and the drive would make a buzz, and i had to reset it to be able to make it work again...

I took it back to the store and they gave me a new one. No probs with this one... yet. lol

My 60 gig worked fine out of the box.

Sounds like Apple received a defective HD, or else there was damage in shipment or a drop. Sadly, it happens. Good thing for warranties!

My Photo 60 works fine, knock on wood :)

(And general troubleshooting for anyone checking in: remember you can reset your iPod by holding Select and Menu on the clickwheel for a few seconds. It will reboot but you won't lose your songs/data/settings.)

Never had a prob with my 40gb photo. It seems that it has less bugs and stuff than the 4g 40gb ipod. Mine works flawlessly. Never had it freeze or nething. The battery is also great. It lasts a while, much better than the 4g I had b4.

I seem to be having the same problem.

Received iPod on December 3rd, charged for 5 hours, connected to pc and installed software and formatted...Uploaded songs...Uploaded audiobooks, and then some pics and all was working fine. Had it with me all day and while at work the battery died...No problem, go home and recharge and all should be well...

Plugged in to the ac adapter and the lcd lit up and then went out...I left it charging for a few hours and then tried to turn it on and nothing.

I am able to get the screen to light up but nothing shows on it. When it is lit up I can hear the clicks as if it is on the main menu just that I can not see anything.

Tried Select and Menu and no apple logo EVER...
Plugged it into my pc and it is recognized (shows as a removable disk in explorer) but I can not do anything with it. The iPod updater never passes the check screen so that I can try to restore it,

This is frusrtating considering I had to wait 2 weeks to get it and now not even 3 days and it seems like I have a paperweight. Anything else I can try.
