iPod problems after installing 2004-10-20 update

Hey, I've had my 20G clickwheel ipod for a few months without any problems. Yesterday I installed the 2004-10-20 update and ever since, my ipod has the folder+exclamation mark icon.
Clicking the "restore button" on ipod updater doesn't work as my computer freezes completly when I connect my ipod.
After hours of trying, I tried to format the ipod with windows explorer, but the ipod always disconnects in the middle of the process. On the bright side, since then, my pc no longer freezes, but when I try the ipod updater now it shows the "can't write to disk" error.
I tried all these things both in disk mode as normal mode.

Does anybody know what I should do? any help would be greatly appreciated

Ok problem solved,
I Couldn't format in windows but now i've used my win xp cdrom to partition and reformat my ipod, and it works.

Make sure you ipod is connected to your pc, then simply pop in your win xp startup CD (make sure you boot from cd in you bios). Select install, and then you can delete the old partition and make a new one (make sure it's FAT 32). After this windows could recognize my ipod.
Optionally you can run the ipodupdater once you get back in windows to reinstall all the firmware.
