i've had my ipod for 6 months or so and i've been synching it to my pc via usb without a hitch uptil now.

whenever i did connect the ipod to the usb port i would get a message saying that i was trying to connect a hi-speed device to a slow connection or something to that effect but the ipod would connect and be recognised on the pc. i assumed that the message referred to my using a slower usb connection rather than usb 2.0 or firewire.

now when i try to connect the ipod to the pc i get an error message saying that a device has caused a power surge and the usb port needs to be reset. i've tried connecting the ipod to all the usb ports (both front and back) as well as to an externally-powered usb hub but i've managed to connect it just once.

on googling for some answers i discovered that SP2, which i have, could be a culprit for this behaviour.

i'd like to know if there's anyway to connect the ipod via the slower 1.1 usb ports after installing SP2 or will i need to install a usb2.0 or firewire card to be able to sync mt ipod again.

thank you!

hey!

dont think it really helps you but in the instruction booklet it says it doesnt support usb 1.1... coulnt confirm it since my pc has usb 2.0

I have SP2 and can connect my iPod through USB. You might want to try downloading all the latest Windows Updates. The best thing to do, would be to get a nice Firewire card.

;)

PS. I use Firewire 99.9% of the time.

well...

the reason why i thought my usb port was the older 1.1 version was cos when i COULD sync my ipod, the transfers were so damn slow...but when i rechecked the system properties i discovered that the intel 865PERL M/B on my pc does in fact have usb 2.0 ports.

i went and updated the BIOS and checked for windows updates. started getting BSODs caused by the atidvag drivers so i updated those too. Then i disconnected all other usb devices (printer/modem/ipaq cradle/external usb hub) sent up a small prayer and connected my ipod and..... wonder of wonders...it connected!...n at super speeds too.

but i think i patted my back too soon. today it's causing the same power surges in the usb ports.

:(

WHY???

ok..i'm getting a firewire card tomorrow..but i still want to know WHY!
