Ok, I've had my gen 3 ipod with my Windows XP desktop computer (using firewire) for 2 months now, and so far it's been working like a charm. Everything works the way it's supposed to go.
I decided to reformat my computer today and I used my iPod to backup most of my mp3 files and stuff. So during the reformat process, I had my iPod disconnected, and after all that I connected my iPod and restored all my backup files to my computer. That went flawlessly. Then I installed the iPod software.
So I downloaded the 2.0.1 software from Apple, and installed it. So far so good. After everything is installed and a restore of my iPod, something wrong happens. For some reason, my iPod doesn't seem to mount properly anymore. While the Do not disconnect message shows up and safely remove hardware icon shows in Systray, the stupid iPod manager doesn't recognize that its mounted and says mounting failed or something. I uninstalled iPod manager thinking it's a iPod manager screw up, but iPod now would only show up as a drive in My Computer if I did a reboot. Ok, assuming I remove the hardware using the systray icon and iPod unmounts, when I reconnect it, it doesn't show up as a drive. The do not disconnect and safely remove hardware shows up still so I have no idea what went wrong. I checked device manager, iPod is shown as a disk drive...ok, that worked, but it doesn't show up as a disk drive in My Computer so it won't work with Xplay, which I'm currently using. Help!
update: I reinstalled iPod manager and when I turn on my computer it doesn't even mount anymore. Well, it mounts during the boot up but when iPod manager is loaded, the iPod gets unmounted. iPod manager uninstalled, computer restarted, iPod mounts and shows in My Computer...looks good. checked safely to remove systray icon and a doubleclick on iPod shows two things. The iPod and an "Generic Volume[f:]" which is iPod. I click remove hardware, iPod unmounts but now ipod under device manager says that:
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)
To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again.
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.".
I unplugged the cable then replugged it back in, now it doesn't show up as a disk drive again. After replugging the cable, "Generic Volume [f:]" doesn't appear in Safely remove hardware anymore, but iPod itself is. I then checked the disk drive properties through my C: drive under hardware tab iPod is there, and it is working properly. If this means anything important, the Location of the iPod is LUN 0.
