Storing your music collection on just your iPod

Since my hard-drive is becoming cluttered and because I initially thought I could just put my music on my iPod without leaving a copy on the hard drive, I was wondering...how can you put mp3s onto the iPod without leaving a copy of the mp3 on the hard drive?
What software do you use? And what's your routine?

I'm asking because it seems that once iTunes detected that there wasn't a copy of an mp3 that I deleted on the hard drive, iTunes deleted the copy on the iPod as well.

set your ipod to manual mode via ipod options in the Edit->preferences menu, when the ipod is connected. once that is done, you can delete the songs off of your computer's harddrive.

i recommend backing up your tunes though, perhaps on CDRs or DVDRs. you never know what could happen.
