(this is my first post! yay!)
All right guys, I am looking to buy a new 10gb ipod (:D) and I am very excited! But, alas, I have no firewire port. Nor do I have the ability to get one. I know that it's a pain to use the usb but I can take it. Now I have heard people on this forum saying what kind of usb port you have to have. My problem is that I don't know how to find out what kind of usb port I have. I have looked in the control panel system device manager, but it doesn't tell whether it is 2.0 or 1.0 or whatever. Any help would be much appreciated. thanks

p.s. I have an emachines from 2000 with windows me if that helps.

First of all the best guess is that your computer is using 1.0 because of the fact that USB 2.0 support didn't become widely available until after the year 2000 and even after that microsoft delayed driver dl's for Windows ME...

Second thing is that the Ipod will not be recognized through a USB port using Windows ME. This has been a known problem and Apple Support will not help you because that is exactly wut they told me when i was using windows ME on another computer. You have two choices: Upgrade your OS or purchase a firewire. Sorry man~ But personally it's WORTH IT and you can buy a firewire for between 30-50 bucks online or at stores.

the most important thing is you must check the motherboard of your computer, and read mother board guide carefully especially the part of USB port ,some motherboard support USB2.0,but infact they don't really has USB2.0 port already, and the guide will says "this motherboard support USB2.0,but you need buy something and plug on the USB2.0 extra-port on the motherboard, then you can use USB2.0,otherwise you only can use USB1.1 port on the motherboard already. there are some motherboard has USB2.0 port already ,and you can use it very easy, for me i have two computer and the one is microstar motherboard 845EMAX, this one SUPPORT USB2.0,but don't have USB2.0 port ,it has USB2.0 extra-port on it, and the other one is ASUS motherboard P4B533,this motherboard support and already has USB2.0 port on it ,so you can use it very easy and don't need buy anything more.

but then it still comes to wpesta havin to buy a firewire because unfortunately no matter what motherboard he may have, Windows ME will NOT support any type of USB (be it 1.x or 2.0) but i think i'll take your advice chenwei when i join my ipod with my XP comp w/o firewire. I owe ya one for that ;)

Well it was made pretty official by Apple Care that because the ipod was not built to support USB through ME OS that they would not be able to give tech support...this was when i had my ME laptop trying to get my iPod to work through a USB and i was forced to purchase a firewire...if you have a USB with ME then consider yourself a lucky one i guess but feel free to call Apple Care and find out for yourself~ :)
