I know that there have been many topics on this, but I want to make sure before I go out and return the FireWire/USB cable. I have a gateway notebook with a single usb 1.0 port. If I hook up an ipod to this port will it work. I've heard a little from both sides, if anyone has experience with ipod on 1.0, not on 1.1 I would appreciate a response.

Don't know if it works, but i do know that if it does work it will be 10 times slower than firewire. So I recommend you to get a firewire card.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think USB 1.0 is even compatible with any iPod versions, period. Only 2.0 is supported. So even discounting the deathly slowness of it, I don't think it'll work at all.
Of course, you could always just plug it into the USB slot and see what happens, before you return anything.

I'm pretty sure 1.1 will work, I don't know about 2.0. It might work and be good for small scale file swapping but if you are using it to put large amounts of music on the iPod (even the 10 gig), buy a firewire card. It will only be like $50 and I wouldn't consider USb 1.x as an option for anything more then a few megabytes.

seriously, before i had an ipod i had a crappy little 256 mbs mp3 player that used firewire 1.0 and it took like 20 minutes to fill what amounted to about only 2 hours of music, very very slow.
When i got an ipod i bought a firewire card at compusa for $19.99 and it works perfectly, now i can put my 8 gigs of music on my ipod in like 5 minutes.

I decided to return the cable, I figure that even though it will be an extra 40 bucks for firewire it's better than this not working at all. I'm only going to make the transfer once and then some infrequent additions so the speed wasn't a big deal, pretty much just 1 upload and I have time, but if 1.0 won't work then it won't work

USB 1.x is supported but like he said it is EXTREMELY SLOW...especially for a device like the ipod with a huge capacity...Also just to warn you, i'm not sure what OS you have but i've posted several times about how USB will not work for Winows ME. Hope you go ahead with that firewire.

guys, the whole point of usb2 and the reason why it'll probably end up beating the crap outta firewire in the market -- hey, don't jump all over me for that, i like firewire too -- is that it's backwards compatible with usb1, meaning that you can plug those devices into just about any computer you find.
so yes, it will work.

I don't know if Ephpod will work with USB 1, but the PCs at my college's computer lab have USB 1 and the iPod is recognized and mounted as a mass storage drive, like with Firewire. The PCs have Windows 2000 Professional.
And to echo what everyone else says, transferring my classwork to and from the iPod takes forever using USB 1. :(
