I have had my 30GB ipod for a few weeks, and had a few problems. but now its all gone wrong.
suddenly my PC said it could not recognise ipod, and Ephpod couldn't read it properly, so I decided to restore it AGAIN!! but as i was restoring the battery ran out!!
Now everythime i press a button on the pod it sticks on the apple logo and whirs for ages and gets hot. Ive tried putting it into disk mode and connecting it to my computer, every time it makes my computer crash. I tried another computer, crashes that too!!!
I just have no idea what to do!!!!!!
Help me please!!!! I just want it to work!!

All is not lost, at least not yet.
I had the same problem, and I let the battery drain all the way down to nothing, overnight. I did this by just letting the Apple flash on an off all night.
Then, the next day, I initally just charged the iPod by connecting it to the AC adapter. And poof, it came back to life.
I then started from scratch and ran iPod updater. It has worked fine ever since.
If that does not work, call Apple and they will overnight you a pre-paid box to return it to them.

Has anyone successfully revived an ipod with these symptoms?
My 15Gb one (only a day old) has just gone belly up whilst transferring songs. After half an hour of apple logo flashing on and off & some disturbing whirring and clunking from the HD it is now sitting there with an pretty apple logo, getting hot. Won't respond to a reset, won't do anything.
I'm pretty cheesed off as I waited 5 weeks to for the thing to arrive and it's already broken. I'll wait till tomorrow when the battery has run out and see if it wakes up otherwise Apple can have it back and I'll spend my ?300 on something that works (like beer).
I'm really very sad as it had already become my favourite thing but if they are this flaky I don't think I'm want to be in this relationship...
Any words of hope out there or is it back to Taiwan for the ipod and back to the pub for me?

Can you get it into forced firewire mode?
Do a reset, (if you can) at the Apple Logo, press FF and Rew keys. I might work.
Are you using USB? Seems that I'm seeing these problems more and more and the only thing I can think of is more USB users out there.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I tried that and got to the screen with a big tick on it saying "OK to disconnect". The only way off this screen seems to be a reset which just goes back to the apple screen > "clunk" > blank screen > apple screen > "clunk" > blank screen... loop. This eventually ends up stuck on the apple screen (till the battery runs out).
I was using firewire (with the 4 pin adaptor) on a W2000 laptop. I didn't windows format the ipod as it seemed a bit sacreligous somehow, so I was using macopener / ephpod to upload mp3s. Had a couple of problems initially and had to disconnect the ipod without dismounting but a reset recovered from this. I thought this was ephpod or macopener being flaky so reinstalled them and it all seemed OK. Now I'm thinking that either the HD is a reject or the ipod had a rather intermittent connection which has corrupted something vital to the start up.
I will give Apple a call tomorrow but I think it's back to the shop for this little work of art.
Thanks again for the help. I've found this site to be a mine of useful information (and occasionally a hilarious read - especially the responses to anti ipod trolls).

Wait! When you got the OK to Disconnect did you try to connect the iPod?
One thing I would try is uninstalling MacOpener. If this is a WiPod you don't need macopener.
The key is getting it to say Do Not Disconnect as you know, but if forced firewire comes up and you can get it recognized, then we might be able to get it formatted to a WiPod (if it isn't already).
Or, it could be a bad drive. I had similar problems w/mine, had to return it.

You're a genius! This seems to have worked. It is now a WiPod and has successfully received some mp3s and is singing again. (Part of me is fully expecting it to crash again within a couple of days but fingers crossed...)
I'll try to further my ipod education so I don't have to keep posting lame queries, is there any further reading anyone would recommend?
Thanks again.

Yeah, every post in these boards. :D
Seriously, just hang around for a bit, you'll become an expert.
I doubt you'll have problems again. The key to iPod happiness in my view is follow these simple steps:
1. Make sure the MMJB iPod Plugin isn't installed
2. Uninstall the iPod Manager (leave the Updater program on)
3. Always make sure your iPod is getting power when transferring, so it doesn't die in the middle of a transfer. If you have a powered firewire or USB w/the Apple cable, you're in good shape here
4. Always unmount before disconnecting the iPod.
5. Keep macopener off of your system.
6. Don't EVER drop the thing.

I managed to fix mine by putting it into disk mode then restoring it.... after that i disonnected it then reconnected it and it just simply restored itself... if it still feeezes after your restore then try resetting it after you've disconnected it...then reconnect it to the pc
Does the pre-paid box work 'out-of-the box' or do you have to spend three sleepless nights formatting the return address?
Well, I'm here again - on my third ipod that won't boot. I'm pretty tired of this.
A week or so ago, I managed to recover by getting into disk mode, connecting, disconnecting cleanly. Hooray. But not today; I can do all that and it still won't boot.
Now I'm busy trying to suck 30GB of music files off, so I can format and reset the damned thing.
The *only* thing that I can see in common is that this happens when the iPod has been left alone long enough that it decides to shutdown completely, rather than just staying "asleep".
There's a serious problem here. I wish Apple would take notice.
