I just got my first iPod and I have some questions. When I first installed it I couldn't get it to be recognized in iTunes but that's working now.

Immediately when I plug in the iPod the screen flashes "Do Not Disconnect". Is that supposed to happen automatically? Also, iTunes does not launch automatically. I have to start it myself then it recognizes my iPod.

I have my iPod set up so I can manually manage my music. I made the mistake of thinking that once I got all my music on there, I could change it to automatic so I could get automatic updates of my Podcast lists. Well, all my music was erased from my iPod. Is there any way I can have my Podcast lists automatically updated but still retain manual music updating?

I absolutely love this site and I've been reading it for some time now.

I apologize if these questions were already answered. I did a search but didn't see anything.

Thanks.

as far as i know you can't have the podcast automatically updated while using manual syncing.

Ok, thanks for the reply. What about the fact that it always goes instantly into the "Do Not Disconnect" screen and it doesn't launch iTunes? I mean, what if I just want to charge it via USB 2.0? I have to unmount the iPod first then turn it off.

When the iPod is connected it will immediately display the 'do not disconnect' message on the screen. You can eject the iPod or leave it connected to charge.

While the iPod is connected, go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and select 'open iTunes when iPod is connected'. If your using iTunes 4.6 then right click on the iPod & 'iPod options' check this.

I do have that box selected to open iTunes when I connect my iPod. I'm sure it has something to do with my initial installation of the iPod software. While the iPod was charging I went ahead and installed the software. Since I already had iTunes 4.7 it told me it wouldn't install that since it had an older version. At some point it asked me to enter the serial number of my iPod but I mistyped it (those numbers are small!!). I didn't get an error or anything, but I caught it when talking to Apple tech support. They had me download the iPod updater software and do a restore on the iPod. After that it took a couple of connects and disconnects befor iTunes recognized it but it did and now works fine as long as I manually launch iTunes.

It's not that big of a deal, but it would be more convenient if it started automatically.

If I remember correctly, if you go into the iTunes options while your iPod is connected and recignized by windows you can change the option to start iTunes when your iPod is plugged in.

Well, I tried unchecking and re-checking the box that says to start iTunes when the iPod is connected and it still doesn't work. I guess I shouldn't complain too much. At least iTunes does recognize my iPod. I see a lot of other people can't even get that to work.
