Hi,
I bought my iPod about 9-10 months ago in the US, when I was an exchange-student there - I now live back in Germany.
The iPod was great, it held as much music I wanted it to, carried around all the data I needed - I had a 40Gig 3rd Generation.
Yesterday evening the horrific moment happened: The iPod fell (as many times before) out of his dock - that usually doesn't matter, it just gets disconnected, it once freezed but - oh well.
This time, it didn't even seem harmed, I put it back in place and waited for it to connect again to the PC - waited and waited - but it didn't.
The PC recognized (WinXP) that something was connected, but it didn't exactly seem to know what. When I tried some stuff (like just pulling the iPod out or trying to read its HD (the iPod showed it was in disc mode) - but Windows just asked me to format the "USB-Disk" - it crashed when I wanted to look up details about the "drive".
Not even the iPod Updater would recognize it, even though iTuneHelper.exe sometimes gave me the message, that an iPod was connected but no iPod Software could be found.
When I tried to play music on the iPod (without having it connected) - it did just find. It was even able to tell me how many files it had on, and everything else it usually can.
So I connected it with fire-wire (first time, though, b/c only my brother has firewire) - and the whole thing crashed - the entire PC just rebooted.
Sometimes I recognized that the iPod was reacting to the demands I made - the Hard Disc began to start, but than you could just hear three "clicks" - and the buzzing of the spinning HD in the background.
Now I tried the iPod Diagnostic Mode - in which it is still running. I started the HDD Scan at least 30 minutes ago, and it is still scanning - still with the same noise, the three "clicks" clicking all the time.
So now I think, the HDD is broken - but it still plays music? I don't know what's wrong, and I really need the iPod soon. So here are my questions:
1. Any ideas of how to fix the problem or of what nature it could be?
2. Is the Apple-guarantee world-wide/can I send it in to Apple-Germany? (What costs?)
3. What are the chances of getting it fixed without having me pay horrendous amounts of money?
4. Anything else you gotta tell me?
Thanks for reading my text and hopefully answering my questions! I'd be deeply grateful for any help I can get. (I didn't even find a contact-addy where I could ask Apple about the guarantee).
