Well, cell phones ( at least the motorola ones ) can be flashed. This means that the phone's software can be upgraded to the software of a better phone. V300 -> v600.
Im wondering whether this can be done for the iPod. 3g -> 4g firmware. If this can be done, it'll be beneficial to ALL ipod users because, as we know, no1's ipod will be the newest one (at least forever).
Im thinking that it can be done, and i'm willing to do it if someone is willing to help.

This has been discussed before, and my conputer ignorance will now probably show. If I recall it can not be done, because the code is secret?

It sure would be nice, caus' the 4g has some new menu options and stuff that are an improvement.

it wont be impossible, ppl have gotten linux to run on ipods. Since they are very similar fundamentally, it is possible. i just wanta know whos willing to help me do it. like honesty, how hard can it be.

Apple could issue a update for the 3g's but i doubt they will.

nono, i'm not talking about an update. i'm tlaking about putting the 4g firmware on the 3g.
I've installed the 4G firmware on a 3G, and to cut a long story short... it does not work ;)
This is probably because the 4G uses different chips/components than the 3G. To get the features of the 4G on the 3G you would have to get the source of the firmware (from Apple) and re-code it to work on the 3G. This is simply not possible because Apple does not release the source code.

I doubt they'll release an update, the reason is; The want you to buy the latest stuff.

Bear in mind a flash is completely different to updates/firmware.
A flash will completely wipe the phone, and make it think its another phone, it uses a different part of the phoens memory than a software update, which will only ugrade bugs etc.
As for falshing iPods I couldnt say and couldnt care because I'm getting a 60gb soon!

the main problem is that apple has kept the source code for the updates private.
you can write your own way to play mp3s if you run ipodlinux, though.
